Does anyone know how much weld is required in welding a threadolet? I have a 8 inch sch 40 pipe, two threadolets are 2by 8. How much weld is required, is it the same as the thickness of pipe, or fill the bevel flush, wich seems like alot and may distort pipe?

Depends on what your doing it for, but all the ones I've ever seen are root/fill/cap just like a regular pipe weld.

If each leg of the weld equals or exceeds the thickness of the 8", you have sufficient strength. the further fill and cap is purely cosmetic. The depth available on a weldolet permits it's use on pipe of several thicknesses, including sch. 160.

For a weld test, you need to know if they are looking for "visual" results or ultimate strength. You will often weaken the connection on thin-wall with repeated passes.

go to www.bonneyforge.com - the info you are looking for can be found there. i don't waste my time and money trying to fill the space up. like mentioned by others here, do minimum 3 passes and see what it looks like. sometimes depending on the size of the fitting i might make 2 cap passes. 1st one down onto the pipe more and the 2nd up onto the fitting. make sure you wait that fraction of a second for sides of weld to catch to eliminate undercutting (my nemesis)
