Has anyone welded cast iron with NI-99 / NI-55 rods using a Thermal Arc Fabricator 181i? If so, what kind of experience did you have? Any suggestions on running these rods with this machine?

Several of us are restoring a cast iron anvil from the 1870's and we may have to weld using this machine. There will be several layers of weld metal. The anvil must be pre-heated to 450 deg. prior to welding. After this a butter layer of NI-99 / NI-55, then multiple layers of Stoody 2110 and finally up to 3 layers of Stoody 1105. Each layer must be peined (peened) and then the anvil normalized over night in a heat blanket, sand, vermiculite, etc. Then after all this, the top must be ground using a cup stone. That's a lot of grinding.

I have 0 input on the subject, but I am curious to see some before, during, and after pics of the repair.

If I can figure out how to upload the photos, I will post the before shots. Three friends and I started with a Fisher Harris anvil from around 1870. It had quite a few issues with cracks, so we had to grind out all of those. The more we chased the cracks, the more showed up, so the picts show the process and what it currently looks like.

All I can say is the Fabricator 181i is a great welding machine.

I never used Ni99 tho.

Here's a review I did on the 181.

Just a couple welders and a couple of big hammers and torches.

Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it.
