I have some split tube I'd like to weld bolts to. What are these things called & where would I find some weldable lugs? Is there a trick for fabb'ing something simple? Considering cutting some coupling nuts in half & drilling one side out. Ideas?
I've Googled the bejeezus out of pinch bolts, clinch bolts, binder bolts, etc - nothing so far.
General welding questions that dont fit in TIG, MIG, Stick, or Certification etc.

More like someone broached the ends I would think. It doesn't appear to be an impact style socket, purely due to the coloring, but its a cool idea regardless. I would talk to a local machine shop or if you have any machinist friends see if they could make something similar. That is actually a relatively common practice in other applications, more so plastics than metal like that, but an interesting concept nonetheless.

I later found these at a bicycle frame builder's website - http://www.cycle-frames.com/bicycle-fra ... TERED.html
And it'll probably work for my purposes here. It just seems like it would be a common thing with lots of sizes for bolts & different miters for various tube diameters.

I'm curious if anyone knows of any 'Free Software'
for constructing tube structures such as this one.

There are lots of good free CAD programs out there, Google Sketchup being a real favorite. Nothing I know of is specialized for 3D tube structure.
