Re: Aluminum craters, Chinese pedal adjustment, feedback

thanks exnailpounder. Judging from your handle, I should have chosen "exenginerd" or "exelectronicsgenius" LOl. I'm enjoying the furniture aspect. Most pieces start as a learning exercise to take a hand sketch to sketchup model. I then go to my garage to figure how in the heck I'...

Aluminum craters, Chinese pedal adjustment, feedback

It's been a while since I've posted any of my work. I've been busy working on my furniture design, all in steel up to this point. I am doing a small job out of aluminum and have been working on my skills. I was having particular trouble tapering off at the end of a weld without leaving a crater. I k...

Re: Compressed air requirements for plasma?

You should check the unit's specification/requirement sheet. They usually list the power requirements (120V @ ? amps, 220V @ ?? amps) and the compressed air requirements standard cubic feet per min at a particular pressure (?? SCFM @ ??? psi). I don't know anything about 50amp cutters but my 27 and ...

Re: hypertherm template question

No problem Jim. I know you are quite responsive on the forum. I really like the machine! I've had a couple small hiccups so far as I have found that the Fine Cut is a bit sensitive to template thickness, using 1/4" (actual = 0.205"). I sometimes slip off of the deflector's edge and gouge m...

Re: hypertherm template question

The brown Santa drove up in his big brown sleigh and dropped off my cutter. I made some rough measurements and here's what I found: Drag tip (kerf approximately 0.062") Diameter of tip/shield is .380" for patterns less than .112" thick Or for patterns slightly thicker, the diameter is...

hypertherm template question

I just ordered a 30xp, haven't received it yet, but trying to work ahead so I can finish a job. I need to make some template/patterns and need to compensate for the diameter of the drag tip shield/deflector. I've found that the diameter of the standard shield is 0.380" but have not found any di...

Re: Jet Horizontal Bandsaw Tuning Frustration

I thought I'd update the thread as I learned something today. I am currently doing a project where I'm cutting much thicker material (3x4 x3/8 angle and 3x3x1/2 angle) than what I normally work with (1.5" 16 ga sq tubing). I felt the 24tpi blade currently working well for me was going to be too...

Re: Jet Horizontal Bandsaw Tuning Frustration

I am completely amazed! Getting this saw working correctly has saved me a lot of trouble today. I got sooooo many pieces cut (multiples of same size) and the pieces all match. No need to dress them to length or square them up with the sander, grinder, or whatever. Put a bevel on them and weld'em up....

Re: Jet Horizontal Bandsaw Tuning Frustration

I was traveling since my last post and haven't had a chance to try anything until today. I made a few more attempts of changing blade angle and increasing blade tension with no improvement. I went to Lowe's and bought a Bosch cheapie (not bimetal) 24 TPI blade for $12. I pulled on my days old fancy ...

thanks.

Re: Jet Horizontal Bandsaw Tuning Frustration

RTFM, I don't know if they do. I suspect this saw is fairly old and been repainted so I'm not sure now much interest they'd have in helping. Poland308, The pivot point seems good. I noticed about .050" blade runout from the top of a 6" square to the bottom swinging the saw up and down. I p...

Jet Horizontal Bandsaw Tuning Frustration

ok. So I'm having a lot of trouble tuning up a recently purchased used horizontal 4x6 Jet bandsaw. I've searched the forums here. I've read the entire Internet  I've joined and searched the Yahoo 4x6bandsaw group. I've watched a LOT of YouTube videos. I've read multiple FAQs etc. I am a friggin...

Re: 3D printed Tungsten Sharpener

I had a friend print up one of these, as well. I've used it some and like the consistency of the grind and the ability to have it next to me on my table while working. It's very quiet too. Prior to that I was using a 4.5" angle grinder with a Skil brand wet/dry continuous diamond saw blade. The...

many factors to consider. If you are making a living with this machine then downtime, duty cycle, support are all big bullet points and an investment in your livelihood warrants blue or red. if you are a serious hobbyist and money is not object then blue or red. if you are a hobbyist, learning the p...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

I welded up a light-duty steady rest out of aluminum tubing (0.75"/0.0625" wall) left over from folding kayak building projects. Nothing fancy but I felt it was a good chance to practice several skills: 1) welding aluminum 2) welding small diameter tubing and 3) coping tubing. My welds won...

Re: Visibility

I had visibility problems when I first started and I where glasses 24/7 with progressive lens. No amount of cheater was going to help and probably have seen worse without the other needed correction. In my first welding class I might as well have been closing my eyes and pulling the trigger. I could...

Re: short and medium cap on 17 torch, loose collet/tungsten

Interesting Oscar. I checked all of my collets and they are all in the 1.15" range. I bought them from LWS and they are packaged with the Matheson label, made in China. I'll try to order some new ones not from LWS.

Re: hobart plasma - improving quality and current setting?

Thanks Jim. Dragging w/o the standoff will make things a lot easier as there will be a better view of the working area and less stuff to get hung up on. The only reason I made a standoff fitting for the torch was a line in the user's manual stating that a standoff of 1/16-1/8 would improve cutting s...

Re: hobart plasma - improving quality and current setting?

No worries. I've used plenty of regulators and am familiar with self-relieving vs. non. The big difference is that those applications were all low flow and the droop is very small. The 4-5scfm flow rate of the cutter was enough to throw the pressure off. I guess it falls under the "now you know...

short and medium cap on 17 torch, loose collet/tungsten

Simple question, simple answer I'm sure. I have never been able to use my short or medium caps on my 17 torch. The collet just won't clamp onto the tungsten. Only the long cap actually works. When I compare the various caps, the threaded brass end appears to be 1mm longer. at most on the long cap. I...

Re: hobart plasma - improving quality and current setting?

I got a chance to do a couple of quick tests and learned quite a bit. 1. Air pressure adjustment. Rookie mistake. I was previously adjust pressure without air flow. Today I dialed the current know to zero so the air solenoid would kick on. The air pressure dropped a ton! I found that i needed...

Re: hobart plasma - improving quality and current setting?

noddybrian, you've made several really good points. The one that I'm really interested in is your suggestion regarding dialing back on the current. I tried varying current and the only effect was the air solenoid kicking on at the low end to allow pressure adjustment. I saw no difference in cut qual...

hobart plasma - improving quality and current setting?

I have a Hobart Airforce 400 and I am trying to improve cut quality. I am running it on 220V with air from a 15gal DeWalt compressor rated at 5scfm@90psi with Motorguard M-30 submicron filter to clean/dry the air in addition to the internal filter of the hobart. The 400 specs 4.5SCFM @60psi, no prob...
