thanks for the input, this student passed 3G and 4G SMAW, and is now in GMAW preping for 3G short arc transfer.

in most cases mig welding is for thinner material, however the hulls of ships at NASCCO ship repair facility down the street from me are welded with fluxcore. the size of the wire and the voltage of the machine can allow for usage of thicker materials.

i have had some issues with Lincoln gloves, the intermediary isolation has degraded quickly.

today an AWS Inspector showed me the limits of OVHD face and rotational dimension which will allow for my student to pass the 4G Qual.

if a rod has been re-baked to many times the moisture content of the flux will be to low and the fulx will fall off causing the rod to be as worthless as when wet.

be careful on the number of times you re-bake rods 7018 has a re-bake temp 450*F and can only be re-baked one time you can find the temp and time for re-bake from manufacturer.

the school is giving some active duty Marines the opportunity to receive training in welding at no cost, and his hobby is custom hot rods, so he thought he would give it a shot. with some of the suggestions on the board he is getting better. hopefully enough better to pass the 4G cert.

when learning to weld 7018 1/8" do not exceed 110 amps DCEP do not whip and pause. You can whip 7018 just fine. Many pros do it. And 110amps is the minimum for 1/8" 7018. Get your fact straight. the min amps for 7018 is 90 @ 1/8" http://www.lincolnelectric.com/assets/global/Products/...

in addition to trapping slag (and a lot of it) the whip and pause motion with 7018 cause serious undercut especially if welding in a groove. I know not to whip, thats not my style. But 110A is really low. i also originally said learning, as skill increases the amps travel speed and specific angles ...

he is unsteady in the booth while working in OVHD, causing the welds to be shallow and erratic.

this student is practicing for the 4G Smaw qual. and is not able to find a comfortable position. We have spit-balled many ideas, none of which have worked out for him.

I am an instructor in addition to a welder, i have a student with nerve damage in his arms and lower back problems. He is having some issues with overhead SMAW any thoughts?
