Re: Gas Cylinder Ownership

I just exchanged this tank yesterday so I'm not sure they've done anything with it yet. Will I be able to sell the tank to someone else? Can I exchange the tank at a different welding gas supplier?

Gas Cylinder Ownership

I'm teaching myself to weld so I know nothing about the industry practices. I bought a full tank of Argon online and shipped to my house. So it was an owned tank with nothing on the neck. I took it to the welding supply store Saturday and they don't fill on weekends, but could exchange it. I paid fo...

Re: Learning to Tig, Advice Requested

Thanks southpaw. That manual is very helpful. I think I'm finally getting it. Watching Jody'so videos over and over helped. I can work for a while without having to regrind tungsten. I have made a few beads I'm proud of. Ones that actually look like I knew what I was doing. My next problem is fittin...

Re: Learning to Tig, Advice Requested

I upped the Argon to 20 SCFH and tested that there was gas coming out during and post and tried it once more. It was a huge difference! I was able to do several beads without an issue. It was very quiet, no sputtering. I did have to regrind once but that was probably due to dipping it in. Thanks for...

Re: Learning to Tig, Advice Requested

I appreciate the help guys. I'm running at 60 amps 3/32 1.5 % lanthanated Tungsten. I just bought a gas lens and corresponding cups. How do I check the gas? I can press the switch on the torch and I hear a hiss. I wonder if this is a problem. The machine I have has a post flow setting which I have t...

Re: Learning to Tig, Advice Requested

It's 1.5" square tubing mild steel 14 ga. I am turning it to avoid going vertically. My welds were so poor I've gone back to just practicing on plate. I can't seem to even to that now as I somehow contaminate my tungsten every time. I can see the tungsten burning up in front of my eyes. I reall...

Re: Learning to Tig, Advice Requested

Trying to weld up a frame for a welding cart. Making damn ugly welds. Burning holes mostly. Getting rod stuck and contaminatingredients the tungsten. Don't fill like I'm dipping it in. This is so much harder than plate.

Re: Learning to Tig, Advice Requested

Well my gas works fine, but I had the polarity reversed. Wow does that make a HUGE difference! I managed to put down several "beads," not sure if any of them are any decent. There was still some popping within the base metal should would occasionally shoot spatter and I think it contaminat...

Re: Learning to Tig, Advice Requested

Seems like my arc length might be too long from what I can look up on my own. What should it be?

Learning to Tig, Advice Requested

First time trying welding. I'm trying to learn tig and have bought everything I need to get started. Here is what I tried: 1/8" mild steel 3/32" 1.5% Lanthanated Electrode, protuding out of a #6 cup about 1/4" 71 amps from the machine with 15 CFH pure argon. Using High Frequency Start...

Re: Never welding before, want to weld 304 Stainless

I watched Jody's videos and some from another guy on youtube. They sure do make it look so easy. I do know that it won't be. Could you use the solar flux stuff to help with the back side sugaring? What size tank would you guys recommend for starting out so I'm not getting it filled constantly, but w...

Re: Never welding before, want to weld 304 Stainless

I considered mild steel for cost and ease of welding, but we will be pulling the stainless drums on and off the frame work weekly for cleaning so obviously no paint would hold up. I wondered what powder coating might cost for something like this. Anyone have a quesstimate about what it might be?

Re: Never welding before, want to weld 304 Stainless

This is going to be for a brewery that my brother in law and I are planning on opening. Right now we have a stand made out of wood and are working out of his garage. We hope to be in business in the spring in a commercial location. 1000 lbs of weight is really the worst case scenario. This would be ...

Re: Never welding before, want to weld 304 Stainless

Thanks for welcome and advice. What I was hoping to build was a single tier brewery stand. I attached a picture. On the brewery forum there are loads of people who have built them as their first time welding. They usually need them to support a much smaller weight however. A lot of them are mild ste...

Never welding before, want to weld 304 Stainless

Hi, I have never welded before, but I'm an extreme DIYer. I am interested in welding up a frame work of 1.5" Stainless square tubing for a brewery. The frame will need to support 1000 lbs of boiling liquids so I don't want a failure. What is the best process to use for this without breaking the...
