Re: Beginning Tig
Haven't posted for a while. But, I've been working on this header project and about halfway done. I did the first pipe three times before I got it positioned correctly. Things are moving along now. My fit ups have improved a lot and as a result my tack welds are better (smaller and less heat). I'm n...

Re: Beginning Tig
I tried some of that .035 rod. Big difference. More room near the arc and as mentioned, easier melting.
Things do get ugly when I have to stop and re-position.

Re: Beginning Tig
I only use the hose clamps to tack with. Then I remove them. The tack puddle moves out real fast and I was surprised how quick that happened and how quickly it got to the clamp. I am seeing some improvement in my welds. I can see the back side of the welds I'm doing and there is some sagging. As poi...

Re: Beginning Tig
I mis-spoke on the tungsten size. I'm using 1/16" and a 17 torch. The welder is a Lincoln Square Wave 175.
It seems like I'm putting a lot of heat into the joint. Am I not moving fast enough?

I've started practicing tig welding 18 ga tubing a couple of days ago. I haven't had much luck until this morning. The first photo is of one of the clamps I made to hold tubes together. These work great except I have to work on not accidently welding the clamp to the tube when tacking. http://i1214....

Re: Second Beads
The T-joint weld seems to have "wetted out" more to me. In addition, the "cold joints seem to have a grey appearance as if there was slag lying on the joint. With the .023 wire the machine is set with voltage at 3 out of 4 settings and a wire speed of 85 out of 100. These are factory ...

Re: Second Beads
Thanks. That's what I thought, too. The only one that looked as if there was any penetration was the last photo.

Raining all day, so I had some more time to practice. The following pics are what I did today in order. On 11 ga plate I used .023 wire and factory settings on the welder. http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc493/nomad57/PracticeTwo%201%20640x640_zps4ujutgkm.jpg http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: First Beads II
I noticed on the back of this plate that there where some arc strikes were there was an insufficient ground.
All I have used this welder for before was to tack. Then it went somewhere else for welding.

Re: First beads
Thanks Steve. After looking at things I see some areas for improvement. I seem to be favoring the top of the lap joint and my speed is inconsistent. Also, there appears to be some undercut on the top of the bead. I'm thinking this is a speed issue. I'm just happy the bead is straight. As the morning...

This last photo was with .093 scrap plate. there were no recommended setting so I used a voltage setting 3 and wire feed of 70. One side I kind of welded up hill. There were some holes in the plate so I plugged the, http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc493/nomad57/PracticeWelds%204%20800x800_zps0xh...

I did some practice beads this morning. The welder is a 10 year old Hobart Handler 175 with four voltage settings 1-4 and wire speed of 0-100. the first three photos are 11 gauge plates using .023 wire. The Hobart setting guides for .023 wire call for the voltage setting at 3 and wire feed at 90. I ...

Re: New Welder in Central Florida
Thanks Braehill. No, no safety critical welding for me. The last time I had to do that, I cut and tacked everything in place. Then I hauled it to Orlando and had Tim Takash final weld it. My welding will be brackets, new headers, another alternator mount, and stuff like that. I'm on my last chassis,...

New Welder in Central Florida
Hello, I'm Bruce and I live here in Central Florida about twenty mile from Mouseland. My main passion is drag racing with a side interest in race carburetion. Back in Michigan my BIL (brother in law, first wife, now back to being my buddy) did all my welding. A couple of race cars, trailers, etc. Si...
