Learned a lot on this job
I did a lot of firsts on this job. One of my first aluminum tig jobs. Welded 1/16” to 1/8” and used roll pins. I also decided building doors is a pain!! Building them, not so bad. Installation is another story. Old construction so everything is off a bit and just tightening or loosening a lag bolt c...

Re: Gas tank update
Yeah it’s hard to do a job when you’re on a time crunch. I put my helmet on a 9 shade the other day so I could see the puddle better. It helped but my eyes could tell it. I prefer a 10 or 11 but if I wear safety glasses on a 9 it helps to cut the glare and I can see better.

Re: Gas tank update
That makes the two of us. Do you feel like you get consistent results Tig Welding? Especially aluminum? Seems like every job I take I always run into a snag that I have to figure out before I can finish the job. Inexperience? Maybe. I’ve got more in my head than in my hands I guess.

Gas tank update
Well I got it. Have y’all ever had an argon bottle start out dirty and then clean up? Seems like after I tried it again the more I went the cleaner it got. I don’t know. I put my old bottle back on and it was all good so I put the new bottle back on it cleaned up after a while. Crazy.

Re: Building an aluminum fuel cell (gas tank)
I’m gonna give it another shot tonight. I’ll try to get a pic but it’s just a simple rectangular box with outside corner joints to weld. Just like the ones in Jody’s latest video.

Re: Building an aluminum fuel cell (gas tank)
This aluminum had the sticky plastic shrink wrap stuff on it so I think the only dirty stuff on the top side could’ve been the filmy stuff. I also could weld a piece of scrap right on top of the tank and it welded fine so I don’t think it’s a gas or torch issue. It’s a CK worldwide torch. 3/32” fill...

Building an aluminum fuel cell (gas tank)
So I took on a job building a custom fuel cell / gas tank. It’s 1/8” aluminum 31” x 14” x 7”. I put two baffles in the middle of it and everything was going fine until I put the end caps on. I could get a puddle on either piece of the metal but when I added filler it just went all to pieces. The fil...

Aluminum garage doors project
It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve been swamped at work and had little to no time to work on this project but I’m nearing the finish line. One pic is the front and one is the back. I also have a pic of the nice machined hinge straps a local shop did for me. The first pic is where they were dr...

Re: First welds....advice welcome.
If you want to get some good advise make a longer weld so we can see how it all looks when you spend some time under the hood. Those shorter welds look fine and looks like you’ve got decent penetration so I’m sure they’ll hold. If you’re really trying to get to a certain level then I think a longer ...

Re: What's up with this?
I'll try to get a post grind pic. I'm using a Carborundum flap disc and something like a scotch brite disc. It's tubing so I can't get to both sides of the material. Thanks for the tip on putting the filler in the root. I could have an issue with my technique. I'm really not super experienced as far...

Re: What's up with this?
Sorry guys. I was using this weld as a before grinding view. It's not that big. It's 1/8" material. The little divot at the end wasn't the issue. I think after it's ground it seems to have some porosity hidden under it and I'm not sure why. I brush it and use acetone but I guess it's still not ...

What's up with this?
Does anything look wrong with this weld to anybody? After I grind it down smooth it has these little dimples in it and I don't know why! One weld looks like it would be perfect and it has these dimples and a different weld looks like it would be bad and it turns out fine. I was wondering if maybe I'...

Re: Tig 185 overheating issue?
I'm used to running my MP210 and it's an inverter so it doesn't pull as much. My Precision Tig is pulling 64A at max. It's on a 60A breaker so I may have had a little drop in voltage and might have put too much on the breaker. I'm no electrician so I could be totally wrong too. I'm back up and runni...

Re: Tig 185 overheating issue?
So I plugged up my other welder in the same receptical today and had no power so thankfully my welder is ok. Just needed a new breaker. It never tripped but an electrician friend of mine said maybe one leg went bad and it just failed.

Re: Tig 185 overheating issue?
Thanks Poland. Hopefully it will restart tomorrow since you said several hours. I didn't see a switch on the back and really no reason to think the cord is bad but you never know. I saw Jody overheat a 175 and a little light lit up on his machine. I don't have that feature on mine. I honestly didn't...

Tig 185 overheating issue?
im sure one of you guys can help me out here. I was welding away with my Precision Tig 185 on 1/8" aluminum tubing and it shuts off. I didn't think I had over worked it but maybe I did. If so, why won't it come back on? The fan isn't running and it's not smoking or anything. It just won't turn ...

So far I've used Radnor, Miller, BSX and Tillman. Radnors are just super cheap. The rest are good.
