Exude Confidence in your Skills
Walked into work Friday morning and was instructed to take a dual-shield fluxcore welding test, 3G position only, groove weld with backing strip. I hadn't touched dual-shield in over 2 years but had spent the past 2 weeks taking 9 different hardwire tests for the same company. So, after setting up a...

Assistance with helmet headgear...
I picked up a new FiberMetal 706 but I absolutely hate the headgear. https://cdn2.bigcommerce.com/n-pktq5q/82xqw/products/8031/images/13101/FM_5906GY__00648.1436983833.500.500.jpg?c=2 Any of you using the 706 or pipeliner, which headgear would you recommend? Headgear that actually works with the 706...

Gasless Stainless Fluxcore or ER308L
Greetings,
Anyone out there use either gasless stainless fluxcore or ER308L (w/Tri-Mix) on a regular basis?
I'm trying to adjust the settings on my Lincoln MP210 so my vertical welds don't crown up as much.
Thank you.

No grinding allowed after the root pass.

Unfortunately, I can only grind the root. Once the root is in and I get a thumbs up, I'm only allowed to use a wire wheel for cleaning.Poland308 wrote:Often no. You will simply need to grind back into your previous weld to ensure a good tie in.

Sometimes you have to weigh, not just how long this job will last, but the relationships and future possibilities. Good luck either way! The PM, Superintendent and I have a great working relationship and already discussed the possible positive and negative outcomes of this last test. I already knew...

SS smaw can be a mother! Don't give up if there willing to pay you to test You're right, SS can be a mother. One spec of slag can ruin your day. Overhead I long-arced for a nanosecond and it was enough. It left a nice little pocket with a piece of slag. 3G, it was my tie-in which looked good on the...

Re: Stainless Steel SMAW Tips
FAILED once again.
I took the 3G/4G stainless SMAW test again today and both pieces ended up breaking my heart.
I will not attempt this test again.
Perhaps this is a sign for me to move on from this current gig and expand my welding knowledge more with another company.

SMAW Stainless Steel Plate Test
I'm willing to give up a SS 304 3/8" plate set with backing strip to see Jody run this process in the 3G and 4G position.
I ordered my own kit from Triangle Engineering to practice on before my company sends me to take this certification test.

Video recommendation - Stainless Steel SMAW
I can find pretty much any welding process on YouTube but I cannot find any videos for SS SMAW 3G/4G.
There's definitely no plate test practice videos.
I'd even go so far as to send Jody a SS 304 plate test kit from www.trieng.com

Re: Stainless Steel SMAW Tips
Ok, after weeks of practice I think I have a handle on SMAW SS but the stops and starts are going to be my downfall. I can't cant restart like other rods: strike an arc ahead of the bead and drag it start as that will put a lot of garbage in the weld that will/may surface once I start the next bead....

Ah hell.
Thanks for the replies but I was informed I cannot use short-circuit MIG for the project I'm currently working on. Material thickness is 3/8" 316 stainless.

Tips for Vertical Stainless Steel MIG
Greetings, I'm running some practice 304 test plates in my shop for an upcoming weld test. I'm using ER308L .035 wire. I started with base settings of 300ipm and 20v. I'm using a Lincoln MP210. I've tried varying weave techniques but end up with a very crowned up bead. If I weave too fast I end up w...

Don't mean to sound like an ass. But I don't think there is a nut shell big enough. Believe Steve is working on setting up procedures for where he works. Slightly different scenario but same size effort needed. I know there's a lot of paperwork and that you need to be knowledgeable about the code b...

Qualifying a Procedure as per AWS D1.6
Greetings all, Being new in my welding career I am not familiar with qualifying welding procedures. My current job, 54" stainless steel pipe butt straps. My PM originally wanted to weld it with SMAW 308L electrodes which is not very time or procedure efficient. At least that's my assessment. I ...

Here's a pic of the 120ft shaft. Haven't touched a TIG torch in over a year but I'm good to go with SS FCAW with Tri-Mix. I'm not too concerned about ventilation but will keep that in mind when I pull the trigger for the first weld. (if you have trouble viewing the image, right-click and open in a n...

Greetings all, Does anyone have any helpful tips in regards to SS SMAW? I need to test in about a month. 3/8" 304 stainless steel plate test, 3G and 4G positions using 308L-16 electrodes. My boss was kind enough to order me a test coupon kit from www.trieng.com. 3 coupons with backing strips so...
