Re: Forming titanium? now it's in the right forum
How did the bending go? When you heated the Ti, did you have to worry about oxidization? I have also read about needing to heat Ti to bend it, but have never seen or done it. Is the heating similar to the heating that occurs in an exhaust in use? I have heard the coloring of Ti exhausts' is simply s...

Re: Problem with gauge plate
If you have a non food oven the part will fit in, bake it for 20-30 min. per inch of material, roughly, at about 550F, or till it turns a nice blue in a clean section. That will give you a full temper, retaining a good hardness and bringing back some toughness. I'll post a pick when of some tempered...

Re: Heat treatment oven
Funny, I'm teaching a workshop on heat treating in the morning. The "tester" you asked about is for placing a metal on the Rockwell hardness scale. There are lots of testers out there for a range of prices. I find the best place to find them is from drag racers. They use them to verify clu...

Those look awesome! We are just putting a blacksmith shop together at work and I'm excited about trying my hand at forge welding. From my research so far it seems like so many other old world skills in that you just can't read yourself into know what to do. That being said, if there are any good res...

I'm down for a prototype. I'm not sure I could add much in the electronics department, but mold making is another story. When you get to that point I'd be glad to help.

That's certainly a possibility. If you want to save money. You provide the artwork and I can cut the vinyl at low cost. This is the free software that I use. https://inkscape.org/en/ The software works on Windows, Mac and Linux. You will also do the weeding, as I hate this part of the job. &...

Re: Stickers
A vinyl cutter is one of those machines you never knew you needed till you get one. Not sure if anyone would want to, but if you put a vinyl sticker on leather, say the back of your welding jacket, you can use a heat gun and make it stick. It's how they put sponsors logos on racing leathers that are...

Good to hear good things about green and nice report Coolide. I have been eyeing the little 125 ac/dc machine from them as something to throw in the van at the track (motorcycle racing). I know I have wished I had a welder a few times after a spill, and I know I could pick up some good karma, and ma...

Re: CNC Plasma Table
We have an arclight with a 4x8 water table and 85amp hypertherm. The water table is nice, but requires some upkeep. We also have the indexer for pipe, which works really well with the table. We run Mach3 with it. I generally like Mach3, which we run on our other CNC's, but am not a big fan of it for...

What kind of paint are you guys using? We sealed our whole shop floor with an epoxy. It works great everywhere but the welding room. The epoxy melted and burned quickly from any sparks that touched it. We ended up putting down aluminum diamond plate and welding the corner together. Im not sure what ...

I have built a number of adaptive controls for folks, but never a welder. I work with a group locally called May We Help. They are a volunteer outfit who take on such challenges for community members. I think you are on the right path and would reach out to your PT or rehab providers.

Re: Experimental Airplane Frame with Ti tube frame
how can you back-purge internal tubing sections with an external trailing cup?? Let me try that sentence again. Would purging the front with a trailing cup and regular torch flow and purge the back by filling the tubing with argon be sufficient. As I count I would need 3 lines. One to the torch, on...

Thanks for the feedback. The article is a good resource, so thanks ldbtx. Experimental Airplane Frame with Ti tube frame
Anyone here play with Ti? I have a member at my shop (I work at a Makerspace) who wants to build a plane with a Ti tube frame. He is not really a welder. My first instinct is to tell him he is nuts and run far away from this project. The part of me that is interested in welding new materials that I ...

I keep my old mig and stick only rigs out in the cold portion, but the TIG with the water cooler in the heated section in the winter. Done it for years, no problem. I'd probably keep the TIG in the cold if not for the coolant.
