Re: Converting bandsaw to metal ? Or Portaband

Found a lot of craftsmans, and delta bandsaws on CL lately for a few hundred. Wondering if any of you guys have converted them to metal bandsaws with speeds of under 100FPM. I'd like it to be able to do steel/aluminum and mild if possible. Or my other thought was waiting for a deep throat porta ban...

Re: TIG helmet suggestions ?

Fibermetal has a like of lightweight helmets that are competitive with Jackson Shadows but stiffer and with sweet headgear. Jackson headgear isn't what It used to be IMHO. I am 50 years old. Always used 11 for MIG, 12 for big sticks. Had 20/13 in one eye and 20/15 in the other, last test about ten y...

Re: Welding 17-4 S.S., which rod?

I meant the post welding temp for heat treating but that is fine, you have been very helpful. It is for my son's fishing boat, the main propeller shaft. If it were to break at the weld the boat could flood and he fishes the North Atlantic in the winter. Now that I have a direction I can find the hea...

Re: Welding 17-4 S.S., which rod?

Sal, There's a rod made for 17-4 called ER630 and it should be used if you need to maintain the 17-4's mechanical properties, but if you're just building up the shaft for say a sealing surface then you should be able to use 316. Your welds should be convex and if you use 300 series rod it doesn't r...

Re: Building a Portable Sawmill/Controlling Warpage

Very best way is to eliminate most welding from the construction. You can weld sub-assemblies then bolt them to the frame rails. I would start by redesigning you frame section to hopefully incorporate a single member, meaning one piece of stock, sufficiently stiff in the relevant directions, such a ...

Re: TIG brazing for tacking cast steel to low carbon steel

Should be ductile iron. Ok to weld. I would have machined an interference fit then heated the housing until it pressed together. FYI other posters, if your TIG brazing has insufficient pen, you were not hot enough. Note that TIG brazing is a misnomer, it is actually TIG bronze welding. The bronze wi...
