Re: Tig in some dings? (Body panels)

Yeah thays why I was wondering if maybe using something such as silicon bronze would give a good stick as its a brazing without having heat input issues since it flows prior to steels melting point. It all depends on the size of the SilBr filler. What is the exact diameter of the SilBr filler rod y...

Re: Tig in some dings? (Body panels)

Custom autobody is actually my side gig. I have a stud welder and slide hammer. I would typically mig these in to fill and grind. But since buying a tig just trying to find reasons to use it. Maybe find some handy little tasks to put it to.

Tig in some dings? (Body panels)

I have a tailgate that had a rough life, along the top rail of it, it has some small dings. The dings are sharp and small enough I don't think they will be pullable, there is no access to the backside to hammer them out . Filler would be stadard but being as this is a high use/wear area on a pickup ...

Re: looking for some aluminum feedback/tips

I see. Thanks for the clarification sirs. Things Ade happening that I thought, just not quite in the manner I had thought. Thanks again.

I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions to come....

Re: looking for some aluminum feedback/tips

I do definitely see where you are going with the mass heat influx as to minimize heat soak. When lighting up hot and fast like that will it cause the contaminants to just "pop" out? Sorry for being ignorant, I just fond it much easier when I kinda know what to expect. And on that machine I...

Re: looking for some aluminum feedback/tips

I see what you are getting at Len. I had thought, and maybe incorrectly that dialing back the dial/amperage would gibe me more refinement with the pedal, but once again I'm new to the tig bit and will give it a go your way next time and see how it works out.

As always thanks for the help guys

Re: looking for some aluminum feedback/tips

If your machine is set to the 40-190 range and you floor it, you're getting 190 not 125 and that starts flirting with the need for 1/8. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk The machine has a zero to 100 dial to tweak in appropriate amperage within given window. I had understood the dcep was what pull...

Re: looking for some aluminum feedback/tips

Thanks for the help, the electrode had a fairly uniform ball it formed itself on the tip, will step up electrode sizes and give it another whir, I typically only really mess with fairly thin material, less than 1/8 usually. Will I still get a fairly crisp arc start with the 3/32?

looking for some aluminum feedback/tips

Today I cut some seats out of an old flat bottom john, since I had the scrap laying around I figured I'd go ahead and piddle, first off I am using an old miller dialarc HF, 26 torch, gas lens, 1/16 2% lanth electrode, strait argon shield gas at around 15cfh, the material is about 1/16(no idea of all...

Re: new to tig, where to start with setup/consumables

Awesome. Thanks for the help guys. My lws is actually an independent (there is an airgas her too but I digress....) Typically they keep me pretty well setup and hopefully they have gas lens and the other parts on hand, but I am from a town of about 20k so we will see. Is the 1.5% comparable to the 2...

Re: new to tig, where to start with setup/consumables

So then a 3/32 electrode would be a viable candidate? Excellent I'd think in my area it'd be a for sure to have on hand. Maybe keeping those and 1/16 in my box would also be a good idea. Is my thinking in just immediately moving to a gas lens setup seem sound? Hopefully I can hit the lws this weeken...

new to tig, where to start with setup/consumables

As a preface my brother and I run a custom/restoration shop when not at our 9-5's. Most of our uses rarely exceed an 1/8" and typically fall into the .030-.093 range on materials, so.... Just bought a (new to us) old as balls miller ac/DC gig machine in hopes of being a little more versatile in...
