Re: Arc Welder Improvement Question

To achieve 140A current (suitable for 1/8" 6013 rod) with a 32V output will require an input current (at 110 VAC) of 40.7 amps, assuming no losses. That's a big breaker, and some fat wire. If you can double the output voltage to 64 (more appropriate for stick welding), you drop that input curr...

Re: Arc Welder Improvement Question

I'm guessing 175A "peak to peak", for an effective peak amperage of 87.5, and and RMS (effective) amperage of 61. That, at 32V (very low OCV for stick welding) results in an overall power input to the metal and the rod of 1980 Watts. You should be putting 6-7KW into a weld, at a minimum. ...

Re: Arc Welder Improvement Question

You need a lot more amps. I suspect that your amp measurement is incorrect. There is no way you are getting 175 amps to the stinger or that would weld much better. Your wires delivering the current to the stinger/ground clamp are too small to possibly be delivering the full 175 amps. How did you ar...

Arc Welder Improvement Question

I made and ARC welder using some Microwave oven transformers. Check it here. https://goo.gl/AfKDre I get around 32 volts and 175 amps(max). When I did welding the arc is starting slow it means it takes time if you see in the video. The penetration is not so good. I gave it few tests and fund that on...

Re: Why thick jumper cable is used for welding?

The welder transformers use thin wires compared to jumper cable used for electrode holder and ground. Why thick jumper cable is used for arc welding? I also found some difference while using thin 12 gauge wire for ground and holder and jumper cable :!: . But how can only thick output cables for sho...

Re: Why thick jumper cable is used for welding?

That thin wire you see is probably just the primary (mains side). It is carrying voltage, not amperage. The cable side is doing the exact opposite so it must be thicker. Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk Come on, I am not that naive. Okay so you think the welding transformers actually have thick j...

Re: Why thick jumper cable is used for welding?

All conductors offer resistance to the flow of electricity. Imagine each strand of copper in the cable. If one strand carried the whole 300 amps, (not so unusual a welding current), the resistance to the flow of electricity causes heat, large current in a small conductor would instantly melt it. Wi...

Re: Minimum voltage for arc welder

The voltage drop across a silicon diode is 0.6V, so a simple 4-diode bridge (two active at each cycle) for a drop of 1.2V total. Parallelling several bridges doen not increase the voltage drop, it just spreads the current out so smaller diodes can be used. The addition of a smoothing capacitor will...

Re: Minimum voltage for arc welder

With microwave oven transformer welders, voltage is determined by secondary coil windings. Fewer wraps, fewer volts but higher amps. More wraps, more volts fewer amps. @deltawelder, did you disassemble the microwave transformers or did you cut the old secondary windings out? You probably are needin...

Re: Minimum voltage for arc welder

generally you need 50-100v to strike an arc and 17.5-40v to maintain the arc while welding (at least thats true with most constant current welding machines) theoretically if u can initiate the arc that voltage would fall in the range to weld. have you got any way to adjust your amperage? higher cur...

LOL, So do you think I can weld small things in low duty cycle with 38 volts.

Re: Minimum voltage for arc welder

Not sure of the setup op is using but most likely is a parallel setup, so no way to add a third transformer. If by chance the setup is in series than adding a third could be done, although I wouldn't recommend that setup. Instead, increase the wraps on your secondary coils and setup in parallel. Yo...
