just a tip to help transition from overhead to vertical to flat on 5G. place your 4 tacks on the pipe as usual but when you tack the coupons in place to weld rotate the pipe to where the tacks are in the 1:30, 4:30, 7:30. and 10:30 positions. This way you weld overhead from 6 o'oclock to first tack....

You have to run the rod slowly. run your heat just like you would for flat and burn slow enough to boil the slag out of the puddle. If you watch the puddle you'll see the slag try to run down. When practicing I prefer not to grind the restarts in order to improve my skill with them. However on a test I will for sure grind them if a grinder is allowed.

Just found these online. Should be able to attached them to a table and fabricate the swiveling table top. The plan is to build an all purpose test stand for welding plate and pipe in all positions. And it must be compact as i dont have alot of room. I'll post pics once i start building it. Any idea...

TEST STAND

I'm currently looking at a Thermal Arc 161s machine to get some practice on my stick welding... And to do a few projects in my garage as it has TIG capabilities as well.
