Re: Running a Hot Pass with E6010

OK, so I've been practicing a little more running 6010 uphill for the hot pass and the photo attached is what I've got so far. I still need more practice but it's gotten much better. The coupon is in 5G, and the pic only shows one side (you'll notice it was taken before the other side was welded).

Re: Running a Hot Pass with E6010

I'm aware of running 6010 downhill on the root, fill and cap when pipeline welding. However, someone mentioned to me that running 6010 uphill as the hot pass is permitted on tests and some jobs. They also said it's faster and easier than using 7018. From practicing this method it seems it could be a...

Re: Running a Hot Pass with E6010

I grind down the root pass until it's smooth, but haven't tried just traveling along with the electrode (I'll try it in the morning). Other than poor appearance, the big is issue is slag entrapment-especially at the toes of the joint. As much as I've practiced doing it this way, I'm beginning to bel...

Running a Hot Pass with E6010

Hi, Everyone. I've been practicing running a hot pass uphill (second pass) on pipe using E6010 rather than E7018, and find it difficult as the bead appearance is poor and there's a lot of slag entrapment. Typically this pass is filled with E7018 (which is way easier), but I wanted to practice as som...

Re: Respirator Question

Mike,
I'm assuming that you have the air power respirator with your helmet, right? If so, what are your thoughts about it (like weight, quality, ease of getting into tight places,)?

Re: Respirator Question

For now I wear a 3m 7500 series respirator with the 2297 filter. 3m's website says the filter has charcoal and will absorb low amounts of ozone. Last week I starting using this respirator because my old one became defective. Unfortunately, I bought a size large and believe it may be too big so in th...

Guess I'll be the idiot who asks. What is "1/0 cable"?

Re: Respirator Question

Mike, I did some research on 3m"s website, which can be confusing because there are several filters they recommend for welding. With the info I found the 2097 and 2297 are the best they offer for welding (at least here in the US) as they have charcoal in them, which absorbs low levels of ozone....

Respirator Question

Hi, everyone. I wear a 3m 7000 series respirator with either the 2297 or 2097 filters and was wanting to know if anyone on here has a preference for or knows of a better one for SMAW or TIG? I mainly weld carbon steel and stainless steel pipe. Also, I've been researching respirators all day and the ...

Re: Amperage for pipe welding

Thanks for the tip, Jerry. I like the idea of changing the positions of my tacks. And you are right about the angle, it's more important than what I thought and by using it correctly I haven't had to make any amp adjustments in the past two days going from 2G-5G. So I am making some progress.

Re: Amperage for pipe welding

Well, I give that a shot and see if it works for me. Also, Shield Arc, for someone who does strictly structural your root pass looks good.

Re: Amperage for pipe welding

It's been a few days, but thanks for the tips guys. In regards to my original post, much more time under the hood is needed. That being said, from what I can tell about 12-15 more amps are needed (at least with the welder I'm using) in overhead when the pipe is in 5G. Also, I wasn't using the correc...

Amperage for pipe welding

First, I'm new to this site and to welding, so hello to everyone. Second, I need help with my welding and have questions. OK, so I've been stick welding schedule 40 3"-10" pipe (with wall thicknesses between 0.216"-0.365"), and before welding the coupons I set my amps using a 0.3...

Hello to all from new member

Just wanted to introduce myself to everyone and say 'hi'. Like most here, I joined this webpage to gain more insight into welding, as my skill level is poor and needs improving. I have some experience with structural welding but am more interested in the pipe aspect of it right now. Currently, I hav...
