Re: looking for a new plasma torch

Okay, after browsing some more I see there are quite a few lower cost torches out there on ebay. The high priced ones I saw on welding supply sites were $400 and up. What I am hoping for is a little better torch than the S45, and one for which the consumables are readily available. Now, the low cost...

looking for a new plasma torch

I'm looking for suggestions for a plasma torch to replace the S45 torch that came with my Everlast 205 that I bought many years ago. When I did a quick search I was surprised at some of the prices. Is there anything in the couple of hundred dollar range that is any good?

Re: 120V wire feed welder suggestions

thanks for the suggestions. The more I look online at different models and prices and specs the more I'm trying to boil down why I want one of these things. I'd like variable voltage, but I want to keep the cost down. Basically I need the thing for when I need to do something away from my shop and t...

120V wire feed welder suggestions

I've been welding for several years with a Miller 251 Mig and have stick welded in the past. I'm thinking of buying a 120V welder for portability and where I don't have 220. Looking for suggestions. I'd like wire feed.
thanks,

Re: how should I weld these plates together

Yes, I'm hoping to find a way to keep things from distorting a bunch. I was thinking of tacking each bunch of 6 together first and then tie everything together with the straps. I have a gantry crane and chain hoist to move the whole mess around with. If I skip weld some on each side alternating side...

Re: how should I weld these plates together

I've got a Miller 251. I'm not a certified welder but I've done lots of welding over the years, first with stick. Been using the 251 for over 10 years now.

how should I weld these plates together

1x6anvil.jpg I'm building a 100lb power hammer with about a 1000lb anvil base made up of 1"x6"x24" flat bars. The plan is to weld them together and to weld straps around the bundle as shown and to weld the bottom end to a 2" thick plate for a base. There will be a 10" squar...

Re: settings for plasma cutting

Thanks, Mick. I finally got around to calling Everlast and the tech support guy got me going with 60 to 65 psi of air and cranking the amps up high as it will go. I'm doing pretty well on material up to 1/2 inch. I want to cut some 5/8" and am having a little trouble keeping the cut going, but ...

settings for plasma cutting

Help, Hi gang. It's been a while since being on the forum. I couldn't find a specific place for questions about plasma cutting so hope this is okay. I have an Everlast PowerPro 205 multiprocess machine that I bought a little over a year ago. I haven't used it much but now I need the plasma cutting f...

Re: Miller 251 problem, running again

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm up and running again after cleaning the rollers and making sure the wire on the reel wasn't crossed up. It's just something I had never run into before. I'll know what to check next time.

Re: Miller 251 problem

Thanks for the idea about the liner. That might be part of the problem. I'll look into it. But I think I improved things a lot by methodically going through and cleaning the rollers. I found them to be a little dirty. After cleaning them most of the stuttering cleared up.

Miller 251 problem

My trusty Miller 251 has developed a stutter. It worked fine 2 days ago, then yesterday it began cutting out. I start the arc fine and I'm pushing along and the arc just quits momentarily then restarts. I'm welding at 18 volts and wfs of 250 ips. I haven't changed any settings since 2 days ago. I su...

Keep at it, dude. Practice, practice, and come back and watch Jody's videos and read the stuff he's written on TIG. I'm only a little ways ahead of you on the curve so I know what you are going through. Have patience and keep plenty of sharpened electrodes handy.

Re: tungsten selection...what??

Steve makes some good points there. I've been trying to teach myself TIG welding using an inverter machine and as usual when I do this sort of thing I look in every book I can find on the subject. Depending on the age of the book, the recommendations vary considerably. I am thinking that TIG welding...

Re: wandering arc?

Steve, Can you tell me where to buy Sylvania tungstens? I have some tungstens from Diamond Ground that should be good and seem to work well. I was able to buy those after someone posted a seller on ebay. A couple of welding supply places on the internet couldn't tell me what brand I would get if I o...

Re: wandering arc?

Thanks for all the tips, guys. I am doing better after reshaping the tungstens to a finer point and making sure I keep the arc close. I also rechecked my ground. I'm getting a higher percentage of good looking welds. I think now I need a lot of seat time to practice. I realize one problem is my impa...

wandering arc?

I continue to have issues with porosity in my welds in steel. I finally realize that there is one fundamental difference between welding with a oxy torch and welding with TIG and that is that I have complete control over the direction of the torch flame, but sometimes with TIG the arc wanders from o...

tig classes, dvds?

I've been making progress learning TIG welding with my Everlast PowerPro 205 welder working mostly with mild steel so far. Using Jody's videos and tips I'm beginning to understand things like unstable arcs and such. I'm thinking of ordering the DVD from Northern that is supposed to be pretty good. B...

question about plasma cutting

I'm new to plasma cutting. I've found very little in the way of recommendations for settings. Is the air pressure important for cutting or for cooling the torch or both? What air pressure works best? Has anyone found an inexpensive source for S45 torch consumables? How often would a person expect to...

I have an Everlast PowerPro 205 which I've had for a couple of weeks. So far it works as advertised. I've tried tigging on steel and aluminum as well as plasma cutting. I was concerned about reliability over the long term but I have heard from at least two people who have had similar units longer th...

thanks everyone for the good advice. The pdf on gas and cup size is especially helpful.
I was doing the welding inside the shop out of the wind, but took the pictures outside for the light.
I'll try these ideas over the next couple of days and see where I get.
