Re: Tips for crusty excavator bucket
Grind it, clean it. Spend a lot of time doing that. Get down to base metal. Make your root with your 6010, clean with a grinder - that might be the easiest way - top off with your 7018. On the reverse side, grind down to base metal, repeat the process. I know some of the other guys have suggested so...

i don't think you can ever "over engineer" a project. every time i build something, when i am finished, i always seem to find something i could have added to make it better. craig Sir, you are correct! There is no substitute for having the tools or supplies you need at your fingertips. Wh...

I had a welding table years ago that had a lot of bells and whistles on it, but I had something you don't!! LOL! I had a moveable holder for my bottles of Boone's Farm Wine; the welders helper, back in the day. Hey man! I over-engineer everything I build. I think it looks great!

Re: Cast Iron Repair
Man, I wish you hadn't posted that skillet. I had an old lady hit me with a skillet one time; many years ago. I still feel that one. Anyway, since the part looks like it is just cracked, have you considered brazing it? I have heard that grinding cast iron can 'smear' the structure of the metal. I ha...

Re: 3/8 wall pipe T joint tips
Hey for the 3.5" pieces, I'm going to cap one end with 3/8 plate and it will also be load bearing. I'm torn on how to cut the cap. The tube sections are 3.5" OD with 3/8 wall so 2.75 ID. Should I cut the cap to 2.75 and fill in the 90 degree cutout, or cut the cap to 3.5" and bevel it...

Re: Which flap discs?
I have a rubber or plastic backer for my Milwaukee angle grinder and some sand paper discs. From the contractor supply store down the street, I can get the sand paper discs for .10 cents if I buy 10 or more. Any grit. Attaches to the backer with a set type bolt, which holds down the backer and disc....

Re: Need help
Try and get yourself some 3/8" plate and grind or flame cut a 45 degree angle into each side. Another thing you can try is this: Take some strips of 1/4" X 1" wide and tack them to another 1/4" thick plate. You want to end up with these gaps about 3/8" of an inch between the...

Re: Critique my work
You can't get away from build up on flat plate. As Billdacat suggested, remove rust and scale. Try doing some joints. Try doing a 'Z' weave. If you feel like there is too much build up, turn your wire speed down. Read the puddle, don't watch the end of the wire!

I believe I was using 10 and 40 with the propylene. It has been so long since I have used that gas mix that I don't remember HOW to use it! I think the last time I got on MAPP or anything other than acetylene was around 1990 or so. And, I have forgotten what it was like. This is what happens when y...

Re: Any tips for cutting.
For oxy/acetylene try your gas at 10 and oxy at 40. That should be plenty. When you are cutting holes in plate steel, start off center with a pilot hole. Angle your torch so that the slag doesn't go back into the tip or all over you. After you start you pilot hole, work towards the edge of the line ...

Don't be afraid to turn the machine up if you need to. If I were teaching you, I would have you stay away from whip and pause at this point. Do what Poland suggested, and use a steady drag with some slight side to side 'weave'. If you are 'weaving' pause on each of the toes to allow the weld to comp...

Try running the 6010 for your root, and spend a little bit of money and get some 7018 X 1/8" for fillers and cover. AWS Classification: 60 = 60,000 LBS. guaranteed minimum tensile strength of filler metal 70 = 70,000 LBS. guaranteed minimum tensile strength of filler metal 1 (just after the 60 ...

Re: 6011 Lap Joint/ Fillet Weld
I would focus the heat on the "bottom" plate, create a puddle, then "wash" it over to the edge of the top plate. If you focus the heat on the edge of the top plate, it will just melt back and never fuse with the bottom plate. Try to make the bead flush with the top of the edge o...
