What gas did you use Steve?
Also did you allow the plates to cool before doing the opposite side?

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Interesting settings. I really don't have time during the day to play with the Aspect and with Adult classes in the shop every night but Friday and weekend access almost forbidden it's tough to find time to play. I went out last Friday and was messing with pulse on 0.055 SS, 0.020 filler and 3/32&qu...

Re: How concave can the face of a fillet weld be?

A fillet weld is measured by the largest inscribed isosceles right triangle. On a fillet with a flat or slightly convex face it will be the smaller of the two leg sizes. On a fillet with a concave face you need to measure the throat. The gauges Poland has linked to are pretty decent for doing that. ...

Re: Old jobs you have worked on

Saw this thread and went looking for this pic, welded this about 30 years ago. Note the size of the chains, 7/8" dia. links 20' long choker chains, make a man out of you pulling them around the shop and rigging them. As you can see it was painted in primer after heat treating and there is some ...

Re: Shielding gas

Well the old dog learned a new trick today. When jones said he could not form a puddle I immediately thought it was a machine problem and gas never entered my mind. In all my days of tig welding I have never seen what he said happened to him, until today. But then again I have never run a cylinder d...

Re: Shielding gas

If you have a gas issue your tungsten would be dark after it cooled down due to a lack of shielding. But with 140 amps you should have been able to form a puddle no problem even with bum gas and at that amperage the tungsten will grenade with no shielding. Sounds like it could be a grounding problem...

I was one of the bata testers of the Aspect last year. In my almost 40 years of tig welding I have used a lot of machines and the aspect is second to none, AC control is amazing . We just got one and I have had limited time to mass with it again. I don't have time right now to find it but if you sea...

Like I said acceptance criteria in the toilet. Here is an example of a student who was allowed to proceed to a more complicated task than he could handle. As you can see from the picture this poor guy has no clue how to run a 7018 uphill and more than likely had similar results even in the flat posi...

As I understand it, the VT covers the entire weld, including the use of run-off on backing plates, to assure the weldor knows how to begin and terminate the weld in multiple passes. I'll ask Taz to comment on this, as he has access to more current standards. Steve S it's intereting that you say wel...

Re: do I need to go to school

Should you decide to attend school you should thoroughly check out the school. Talk to current and former students if possible, get background information on the instructors. Ask to sit in on a class and view the work of students that the school considers to be of good quality. Far to many instituti...

D1.1 Qualification

I have a question regarding groove weld welder qualification under D1.1. Is visual acceptance for the entire length of the weld being evaluated? Seem like a dumb question but 4.30.3 (4.8.2.1 has similar language) tells you when doing RT in lieu bend tests to ignore 1 1/4” at the beginning and end of...

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that here in AUS, we are not taught to use 6010/11at school for ANYTHING except root runs on plate. The only other time I used it at trade school was in a 4 way + joint penetraion comparison. Just an interesting note. (PS Wtfh, I thought those padded b...

Re: Struck my first arc! Puddle control?

Today I struck my first arc in my welding program at school today. We used a 6010 rod set at 80 amps on 3/8 inch plate. Not as hard as I though t it would be but controlling the puddle and keeping it consistent I see will be a challenge and is going to take some practice. Any tips on puddle control...

Dave, Your observation was the reason for my questioning the joint prep before commenting. Also if the acid is left to develop/etch just a bit longer, the nugget would show up darker and the HAZ more defined. Anyone here use red fuming nitric acid for polishing/etching mild steel? .... that stuff w...

That is a nice looking shop. Shame about the gas welding. I got into the welding thing via O/A and that's how I developed a taste for it. All on ancient WW2 era stuff, too. When I got to school, They had us do half a semester on O/A, to get the right hand / left hand thing down for TIG. It was nice...
