Re: Welding Axle Sleeves
Looks good and solid from the outside, no evidence of cold lap. What it's like on the inside, time will tell. Nice job. Thanks, there was some gap to be filled in a couple of areas so for those I did a root pass then the cover pass which is what you are seeing in the final pictures. What ever I end...

Re: Welding Axle Sleeves
So finally got it welded in, all the welds were laid down on bright shinny metal. I think the penetration went well, it was done on both side of the C Gussets. https://dsm8.smugmug.com/Other/02-Jeep-Cherokee/i-x89b4Ns/A https://dsm8.smugmug.com/Other/02-Jeep-Cherokee/i-ZdNs7fK/A https://dsm8.smugmug...

Re: New to welding - Need advice on welding different thickn
YOu can easily remove the zink coating with some muriatic acid, one of the Easy Off oven cleaners (not sure which one) should also do the trick just let it sit for a while (in a plastic back or such so it wont dry off)

Welding Axle Sleeves
I am going to be installing axle sleeves into my dana 30. The wall thickness of the axle is 1/4" which is the also the thickness of the sleeves. The plan is to plug-weld three spots on both side of the long tube and once on the short side (front axle). I will also be welding the end of the tube...

Re: New Mig for a Newby
I find myself in a very similar position, I already have a Miller tig welder good for 325amp and do AL with it. So like you I was looking for a Mig. I got to try a Miller 210 mig welder (I consider this to be the same thing as the Lincoln). I was able to test it using both flux core and solid with g...

Re: Tig - What should I buy?
Sounds like you got yourself a nice setup. One thing about your table it looks like the top is painted It is a little spendy but get yourself a nice AL plate to put on top of that table this way you can ground to the plate and then anything you weld can be done right on top of the plate and not grou...

Re: super cleaning alum. casting ?
I understand the idea of heating it in the BBQ---- however once the oil gets hot it starts oxidizing and turning to carbon and it might lodge in the pores and then become impossible to remove. I like the idea of boiling water and a soap solution...... If I turn the oil into carbon it will be like t...

Re: super cleaning alum. casting ?
You might want to consider an ultrasonic cleaner for this application. If you find a shop that has one should not be a terrible charge to get it tossed in there for say an hour.

If you are forced to use small coupons for school spend the money and get yourself a copper plate, I use 1/2" thick plate about 6x12 bought off ebay for when I have to do small AL parts. Also get a couple tacks on your piece if you cant clamp them in place. That will at least give you a little ...

Re: Recommended Mig Welder
Except you can't tig ac with it. True but the vehicle he works on would be steel but always good to have everything you need. Always have the spool gun as an option as well. Actually I do a lot of AL work. Some of it about 1" thick which is why I have a 325amp Tig. But to your point, yes I did...

Recommended Mig Welder
Trying to decide on a good entry level Mig welder. Primary purpose will be for tack welding brackets etc in place for an expedition vehicle build I am going to be starting. All of the final welds will be done with my Tig Welder. That said at most the thickness of material used would be 1/4" may...

Re: Weld a SS bolt to 4130?
Dip the entire bolt in acid to remove the plating to ensure you get a good clean weld. You can then cold galvanize after the fact if you want to offer it some higher degree of protection. What does it need to be protected from? Just weather or actually caustic materials? I have welded stainless usin...

I use the acid all the time to remove the gold plating on grade 8 hardware if I have to weld it. The gallon I have has lasted me several years and is still more than 1/2 full. I used a Pyrex container as regular glass can break if you put in too much material since it generates heat. Dont ask how I ...

Re: what's the water for?
Yeah about that not welding with a water cooled torch when the cooler is not turned on... Did you know the non-conductive coolant use in the machine smokes up like a mother when you weld with the cooler off... Took 20 minutes for the smoke to clear in my garage...and I go the pleasure of buying a ne...

Re: WTF is penetration
I did no preheat, with 325 amps I dont need no stinking preheat.... I used muriatic acid like they sell from a pool supply store. It is what I use to strip plated bolts etc if I have to weld them. Nasty stuff make sure to use outdoors. Easy Off will also work along with naval jelly, that is ju...

Re: WTF is penetration
I did something similar, the bar stock I used was 1" x 3/4 or such. Being anodized I had to bevel the edges to get rid of the anodized surface. The left side was done at 325 amps, the right was done at 200 or such. You can clearly see the weld nugget on both sides after the acid etch. In your c...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
Welded up a skid plate, it had been hard anodized, what a PITA. So for the hell of it I had some 1" square anodized AL blocks. Welded them together at 225 and 325 amps. Wanted to see what the weld nugget looked like. So thought I would share. 6061 Blocks using 4043 filler rod. Was not trying to...

Dual Shield Welding ???
Ok so if I understand this correctly.
Dual shield is using both a FLUX CORE wire AND an Argon/CO2 gas mix.
If this is correct then my question is can you use ANY flux core wire or is there one that is meant to be used with CO2 vs. one that is not?

To continue on that these what happens if I welded 316 using 304 or 308 rod.
Of those two which would be the better choice to use if 316 filler were not available.

316 Stainless
So here is the quick question. I have access to a large volume of 316 stainless sheet stock. All I have is filler I been using on 304 along with some 309L rods. Is it best to get the 316 filler rod or can either of these be used instead. I have about 10lbs of the 309 but have never worked with 316 b...

Re: lincoln tig 200
Start your arc on a copper spoon then move onto your weld material, one way to work around this issue. I had to do that on some thinner stainless since I am using a 30+ year old Miller for my Tig welding. Subtle like hammer, reliable like rock. Harbor freight sells a good copper spoon cheap too. I ...
