Open Root Tig
I just started practicing for TIG open root. I am having trouble, so, I thought I would ask for some help from you guys with experience. What size is your landing and root gap? Whats your bevel angle at that? What amperage and filler metal size are you using? are you walking or whipping? What cup si...

Inspectors and spatter, 6G
Im practicing downhill 6G. My filler/cover pass I am using 7010 rod. I am encountering quite a bit of spatter when I am finished. Its not sever but it is present, especially on the top of the pipe. Will inspectors in the field have a policy against spatter? Is there any method of spatter control I c...

Preheating
To all the engineers in here, I have always operated under print specs, which often come stapled with a WPS that includes preheat temperatures, etc.. But I have been curious to know, what are the "rules" (loosely worded) to determine what needs preheat and to what temperature. Of course, t...

Pancake Hood
I have always wondered about the pancake hood. Why use it over other hoods? What is the purpose, other than shoving your head between the ground and a pipe or in a tight spot? Is there really any benefit to using a pancake over other hoods?

Any welders on this forum currently or previously welding in west Texas? Is there still plenty of work to be had? Is it difficult to locate housing? Who are the contractors to contact, and who to avoid?

Re: Pipe Root Process
Wasn't something like this just posted? Yesterday I think. It's interesting. A lot were saying Tig was very common even in the older days. Field work will still be more SMAW. Think of the elements. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk If there is another thread running I apologize. I havent seen i...

Pipe Root Process
6010 root pass on open root pipe is standard and has been taught for many years. This is followed by a 7018 fill and cap uphill or 7010/8010 downhill. (Most typical) I have noticed over the past years many employers and engineers running a tig root with a flux core fill/cap, 7018 or 7010/8010 fill/c...

Re: Anyone know what to run this rod at?
I run mine:
3/32 - 50-55 amps
1/8 - 75-80 amps
5/32 - 80-90 amps
I run on a crisp setting at +2 as well.
Hope this helps!

Re: Soft vs. Crisp?
What is the actual difference? Like what happens differently with each setting? Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk Crisp is 100% arc force. It digs a whole lot more. Soft setting will "soften" the arc force. I have noticed if I have crisp on while I do my 7018 fill pass I am more likel...

Soft vs. Crisp?
Hi all, Question, Im using a Lincoln machine at school, training for pipe, uphill and down. I have never used a machine with soft/crisp arc settings before. I have noticed quite a difference when switching between the two. But I am curious to know, when is the best time to use one or the other? For ...

For sure!
I am currently in Salt Lake City, Utah.
I am mobile and willing to go just about anywhere, especially Alaska. Preference does not matter so much at this time. I have nothing tying me down and more seek experience than geographical location.

I have some questions on downhill procedure. Im practicing for 6G cross country pipe. All passes downhill: root, fill, cap. [/quote] Jake, Maybe you should have found a job before quitting one? :) ;) If I am understanding your question correctly, you want to do 6G but are practicing on a 3G plate. While that I good, you need to get to a 6G practice piece as soon as you can. Running a 6010 straight down is a little differ...

3G Downhill filler pass question
I am practicing for a pipe test. I have the uphill down. I am struggling with the downhill. I am noticing my slag running through my puddle and its throwing of my arc, my visibility, and my final bead. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
