Re: Plasma cutting and bathroom breaks

Steve

Most fully configured plasma cutting benches have significant forced downdraft ventilation that filters and exhausts air and generated gases.

The intention is that the operator is not exposed to any of the residual fumes.

Are you using such a configuration?

Re: Shredded tungstens welding Aluminum with mixed AC/DC

I'm not running mixed DC/AC but am interested in your other settings

Your AC is 250Hz, Square, 62.5% EN - OK

What is the switching frequency of the DC to AC?

Are you running EN in the DC part of the cycle?

200 Amps on a 1/8" electrode should be OK.

What gas? Is it a Argon/Helium mix?

Simon, I'm interested. What lead to the decision to use 316 as a filler for this job?

Re: How long can you pratice?

When I trained, I generally undertook 2-hour sessions then a break, then another 2 hours, etc

Now, when I weld, many times I might work much longer than two hours in any one hit. Whatever the job takes. But initially, 2 hours at a time was a reasonable exposure.

Re: .050 aluminum

Try this: Shrink the warp out after it's been welded. Have a large soaking wet rag on hand. Warm the back of aluminium sheet where the distortion is with a gas flame, then Immediately apply the cold wet rag to the heated area. It should shrink back to less than it was previously. Repeated attempts s...

Re: Question about grounding in a positioner

Jody's video this week features a positioner, with a lathe chuck to hold the part. How does grounding occur in a positioner? I suppose you could ground to the chassis of the positioner as long as there's continuity, but if that's the case does weld current create any problems, maybe heating up a be...

Welcome aboard pmcint01

Do take heed from the others comments. No one wants to dampen your enthusiasm, but there's a lot to learn before you dive in the deep end. Small steps my friend. Stainless can be tricky with HAZ and cracks in the weld if not done exactly right.

Re: Helmet help?

Kym Definitely look for a 4-sensor job TIG welding can cause all sorts of things to get between the arc and the sensors (gloves, arms, etc) and knock out the dimming. Multiple sensors overcome that. However, I agree with the others that this might be a lack of good sensitivity with the helmet under ...

Re: TIG weld stainless flange to nodular cast iron manifold?

I have seen a commercially available automotive turbo manifold cast in nodular cast iron, with a conversion from a troublesome bolted wastegate adapter to a TIG welded on stainless steel tubular adapter. I am assuming it's stainless from the colour change by the weld. Is this a recognised pair of m...

Hi Kym
The repair looks substantial, there has probably been some annealing that has occurred, but it sure will hold. Interestingly, the vice in the picture looks like it's done some hard labor ( ;) )
