One thing I can say is that reversed polarity has absolutely nothing to do with your house wiring. Polarity all starts and ends with which way you connect your torch and earth cables to the power source (welder). To add to this a bit, the AC that comes from the mains changes polarity multiple times...

I'm pretty positive that is chlorinated aerosols specifically that produce phosgene gas. That being said, welding without making sure that the surface is clean of chemical contaminants is generally a bad practice Actually any chlorinated compound could potentially create phosgene so be sure to read...

A blue sharpie works as an alternative - really helps scribe lines stand out. Black does not work so well (really streaky).
