Starting aluminum on Monday

So I passed carbon steel, stainless, and nicu 6G X-rays and start aluminum Monday, I've heard a lot of bad stuff about welding this stuff and hoping some people can give me some helpful tips maybe a video or two, I know I'll be practicing on 5/16" tbars for all my fillets up to a 5/8 fillet wel...

Re: 3G uphill need some help SS

Thanks for info, kinda figured it out tho, we are using some cold rolled steel plates for practice, and it became really scaley, and dirty after quenching it in the tank a few times, and all the scale would get in the puddle and mess me up, adter hitting the plates with a grinder things went a lot s...

3G uphill need some help SS

First off running 3/32, 308-L, at 155. I make a really nice bead in 2Gand 4G, and can do I good 3G with 100S also, but SS kicked my butt tonight, it was like the bead kept falling on itself, no undercut so I guess that's a plus, but I tried turning the heat down, going slower, going faster, so I'm a...

Kinda of a amusing story with the tig finger

So I've been knowing about the tig finger for at least a year, but I've always used stick, and I've been tig welding for about a month now, and to much of a cheap ass to buy one. So today was my practice 6G and my root looked like bubble gum, I knew it was bad, my instructor walked up and goes "...

Re: Has anyone done a structural 6g?

Where I work at, if you practice well I'm all 3 positions when it comes time for your X-ray test instead of making you do all 3 positions again they will give you a 6g with a 3/4 gap and a backing ring on that, save time money and material

Has anyone done a structural 6g?

Just wondering if anyone has done this for any tips, it's the same 6g as with pipe, except the pipe has about a 3/4 gap with a backing ring and the root is 3 beads, one on each side of the bevel, and another between the first two beads, then fill and cap it

Any advice for vertical up hill 1/4 fillet

Would be great, my instructor is on vacation and, the guy standing in for him, can't tig for crap. He's a good guy and can mig, and stick like a boss, but as far as tig he's even honest and says he's not good at it. So any advice or videos would be awesome

Re: I have some beginner questions

Yea my company is paying me to take welding school, it's a perk of working in a shipyard I guess getting a 20k welding course and get paid to take it, I'm not so much worried about pissing him off as him thinking I'm trying to question him (he's a really cool guy also).

Re: I have some beginner questions

Oh yea I had no delusions of striking an arc and laying some killer beads, as my instructor says "you'll only get better with time" which is already showing honestly my beads tonight look like beads instead of metal puddles on a t-bar. I also wear a thick glove on my torch (I was really su...

I have some beginner questions

I have two main questions, I've been stick welding to 3 years but now I'm learning tig this was my second day and my horizontal 5/8 was looking passable by the end of my shift, but I have two questions. First what is a good way to hold/feed the filler in, if I go barehanded I can feed it really well...

Just started tig welding

Yesterday was my first day of tig welding, I've been stick welding for 3 years now and woooo it's a totally different ball game lol. My problem is my travel speed, I got my angle and distance down pretty good, and I need to feed filler in a little better but my biggest problem is I go to fast (I'm g...

Re: Any tips for carbon arcing

Yes I'm def. wearing my respirator while doing this stuff, but my first day of doing it I actually had a blast (pun not intended) and quickly found out that multiple passes do make for a better result.

Re: 7018 vertical down

I've only used 7018 downhill for thin metal never heard of doing it for any structural type welding, seems like going up hill would make for better results anyways

Re: Anybody ever have this problem

Thanks for all the advice, but I think after passing several X-ray test, the op isn't to much of an issue. Also my instructor with 38 years of naval welding had the same issue so I'm sure I'm alright. Sadly I threw the plate in the scrap bum out of pure frustration but I wish I kept it around to see...

Re: Anybody ever have this problem

Also I just took my 4G with same plate and backer setup and never blew a hole in the backer and I was running 1/8 and 5/16 rods with no undercut or holes, just waiting X-ray result (fingers crossed)

Re: Anybody ever have this problem

Yea, the rod even starts to act funny like I was keeping a good tight arc then all the sudden it would just start sputtering and blowing out the bevel, I even quenched it and when I lit up again I was blowing holes in it

Navy testing regulations, and they use the 5/16 backers on 3/4 plates as well
