Re: Set up to weld big rusy chain links
ET - Many thanks for your reply - the actual specifications for this material and for the final piece are not at hand. It will take me some time to gather it all. Your reply addresses the exact items I wish to deal with to end with a safe product. The finish I think is asking a huge amount from the ...

Set up to weld big rusy chain links
I will soon be involved in a project to weld large rusty chain for an artist. I was wondering what the best approach would be - Stick with humongous amps? MIG with pass after pass? Figured this is probably the best place to find that answer. Appropriate rod would also be a good piece of info to have...

Bill, excellent direction. I don't know such a person but I am capable of getting to the heart of the matter with such a person if I can locate him. I appreciate your response. here is a bit further look into my journey. I am just trying to see how small I can go with what I have. This is kind of li...

Re: Start of a new journey
Through a complex series of events I came in contact with the fellow who said this to me.
"Cream and bastards rise". Being the best person you possibly can falls out of that. Again a choice. Never a real excuse for the latter.

Re: Very small equipment.
A few days after posting this question I encountered this situation. Tiny part to be attached to a thick plate. The guy I am working for is massivey skilled and this is an art project not life threatening structural. He had provided a sample that he did with a millerlatic 200. There are two tiny leg...

Re: Start of a new journey
In case you didn't get it, it isn't about the welding. It's about being the best employee you can be. I am old and retired. That was my secret to eating. Monger missed one thing though and that came to me from the most brilliant teacher I ever had and that wasn't welding but government. She said &qu...

Re: Very small equipment.
I would say that .020 electrode is a bad place to start. I did some welding on aluminum that was .025 thick. Had better results using 1/16" electrode with long needle point, than with .040 electrode. The smaller tungsten would burn back into the cup at the slightest issue. I still have a proje...

Thanks to those responding. I have the parts (.020), just not the knowledge or experience. First off let's get it straight that I am not throwing rocks here but attempting to be direct. The comment that there are no wrong this or that.... well, use the wrong just about anything watch watch the circu...

Re: Very small equipment.
My approach stems from the concern of not discovering that I have ruined a bunch of gear and not asking it to perform outside it's capacity. Thank you for your reply. Your response makes sense but often that has no bearing!

Very small equipment.
I have a WP 9 TIG torch and can not find any information about what the ideal use for this torch is. The materials it is possibly used on, settings used for it and so on. I got it to use on very thin material or in locations where the smallest possible weld was required. I have not gotten it going t...

ROD SIZE
So, life doesn't always go as we'd like and now I have this job putting two pieces of 1/4 inch aluminum together and only have 1/16 rod. The next deal it I have two piece of 16 gauge steel and for that all there is, is 1/8 rod. I would like to see how to address these situations with out saddling up...

Correction when only wrong size filler rod available
As a musician I got so I could make a really inferior instrument sound good. I have no idea how I did it but I could tell. There were corrections I made that somehow made up for the deficiencies of the instrument. I am certain such is the case if you are stuck with a particular size of rod that is t...

Re: Aluminum grinding
Xylene is not your best choice strictly from your health standpoint. The gurus around me suggest a shot of WD-40 - that should kill the clogs, if they start to return hit it again. WD-40 may not work as well but it won't kill you either.

Starting voltage (percentage of)
My machine allows me to select the percentage of starting voltage. I can not find any information on how to best use this feature. I weld mostly small stuff around 1/8 or less most of the time. Anyone with experience in this, sharing that info would be really appreciated. Suggestions are what I seek.

Re: PITS
Was there any kind flux? Flux will burn and contaminate if it gets too hot. I think you can do a braze joint too hot and burn out some of the different elements that make up the brazing filler also. It was my impression he was TIG welding with silicon bronze wire?? To the OP, I believe that wire br...

IMG_073D.gif Hi, I make small parts and have not had this happen before... I used silicon bronze on two steel parts - wire brushed and wiped with denatured alcohol then dried with a clean paper towel.... one side had the pit shown the other side looks like it had soil thrown in it.... what went wro...

All the way down - very nicely done. I always like to see other folks approach to things. Great work! Thanks for the effort to get it on here. Love to see tools and equipment where there was a lot of thought put into it and in your case it is obvious. You have design skill as well as execution skill...

Re: TIG Shutdown
Steve, Thanks for getting back to me. I watch the gauge drop from 1500 and it seems like a lot of waste. System is killer tight. Someplace I thought there was supposed to be some kind of potential for a problem if you left the Tank pressure against the System. Good to have place to ask this kind of ...

TIG Shutdown
Is there really an issue leaving the gas up on the TIG unit? All the stuff I weld is really tiny - Seems like I waste more gas than I use purging out the gas. Nobody goes into my shop so there's no chance for somebody to fool with anything.
