Consumable Insert Butt Joints. GTAW
You've covered pretty much any pipe joint people would see in most production work. However, I havent seen any consumable inserts, like they use in powerplants and shipyards. If you gather any interest in doing a video for it, let me know what size pipe and I'll donate the rings for it.

Re: Thin wall cres tubing
As promised. .035 304 tubing to 304 compression fitting. Set machine to 100 amps and used foot pedal, never maxed out the pedal. I used .035 308l wire and purged the piece. 3/32 thoriated tungsten sharpened to a needle point. I ran 2 passes because I knew I was running cold since I was afraid the wr...

Re: Thin wall cres tubing
I picked up some .035 wire and tested amperage on the extra piece. I set my machine to 75 amps and hooked up the foot pedal. Im using a 3/32 2% thoriated tungsten. I put my ground on the fitting and lit up on that with really low amperage to preheat it a little before moving to the tubing. I put a s...

Re: Thin wall cres tubing
Thanks for the responses. I have the option to order some .035 wire, so I'll go that route. It will have a purge on it, and I'll preheat the fitting a little. I was provided a piece of scrap to get my heart right so that helps

Thin wall cres tubing
Ive got some .035 wall 1/2" 304 tubing to weld to a substantially thicker 304 fitting. Its a socket weld, and I'm using TIG, I was just trying to figure out if I should match my filler wire to the tubing? Or is it manageable with 1/16th wire? I am on the verge of ordering some .045 wire since m...

I think I'm better off not being lazy and just going ahead and setting up a purge. Kind of thinking about buying a dual flowmeter.

Stainless Steel Beer Keg
I have a friend who wants a nipple welded in a stainless beer keg. I'm worried about sugaring the backside on something so thin. Is there a way to do it without a purge? I'm assuming I should pulse something that thin, any ideas of a starting point for amperage? I've asked him for a piece of the scr...

Re: Anodized Aluminum
Polished. Just like that, he uses it for cobia towers.
That is my 5th try, 140amps, 3/32 2%lanth tungsten 120hz, and about 35% cleaning. It just seems dirty, and cold. Whenever i get it to wet in it looks like one round bead instead of the way it looks on regular aluminum

Got some anodized aluminum tubing from a friend to try out. I've welded a little plain aluminum before, not much, but he said anodized is difficult to weld. Looking for some tips, or baseline settings to try out. Its 1" and 1 1/2" tubing, looks like about .125 wall thickness. Any recommend...

Thanks for the input folks. It is a fillet weld, nothing for code or anything... just practice in the garage. I had a guy I work with tell me not to point the heat straight at the pipe for fear of melt thru so I tried to lean the arc out some. I may be getting a little carried away with how much tor...

Losing Control Of The Puddle
I have bee practicing welding some sockets in the garage and have started running into some issues. First, I'm running 3/32 thoriated tungsten, 1/16 70s-2 for the root and 3/32 after that. I am welding 1 1/4 sch 40 steel pipe fo a steel coupling. I found the pipe and fittings in a scrapyard down the...

Help with a New Power Cable
I have a 160STH and I'm looking at replacing my power cord from the one that came with the machine. The power cord I am looking at is the WP-17 Superflex. My question is how does the gas line connect to this powercable? It looks like it has an opening down the middle for gas, but how do I connect it...

Temporary Supervisor
So the story without too many specifics, is that I am a long term temporary supervisor of a pipefitting crew. When the opportunity came up I of course grabbed it up. Now after about 2 months I have come to the realization that I just do not like being a supervisor. I like doing the work, and even wi...

Re: I Just Finished My Apprenticeship and Recommend it.
Thanks Gary for the encouraging words. I've been supervising for some weeks now to finish some work after retirements and things. I must say, it is a different challenge and the ability to basically temp run a crew for a long period of time is giving me the opportunity to decide if my tools are my c...

Re: I Just Finished My Apprenticeship and Recommend it.
I'm currently running a crew of fitters now. I'll probably stay right there in the shipyard and see where it takes me to be honest. I'll make the decision to apply for a supervisory position or stay with my tools for awhile when the next ship comes in.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
I got some 1-1/4 pipe at the scrapyard a while ago and built myself a storage rack for barbell plates. The pictures are for the second one I'm building for a friend. Its sch 80 steel pipe. I welded the joints at 85-90 amps with 70s-2 with and everlast 160sth. Comments, criticism are welcome.

New(to me) foot pedal plug question
I got a Varior OHASAA-1K foot pedal from a friend but it has a C810-1425(14 pin) plug on it. My machine (everlast 160sth) has a C840-725(7 pin) socket. I found a place where I can order the 7 pin plug, the question is can I just swap the plugs and use this pedal on my machine?
Thanks
Thanks

Sweet, thanks guys. Now that I think about it, when I ran the first pass I was having to move slow to get the two plates to tie together before adding rod. On the second pass I wanted to be able to move slow and concentrate on keeping the weave tight and my filler addition. I have some that need the...

Tig Practice, Feedback wanted
I made some T joints for practice out of some scrapyard steel. It's 1/4 thick if i remember right. I ran the first pass with no weave at 110-120 amps with 1/16 70s-2 then a weave pass at 125-130 amps with 3/32 70s-2. I am not a welder but a pipefitter with tack quals, and I have an Everlast 160sth a...
