Re: career advice

[quote="Otto Nobedder"]I've worked the non-union side of ironwork, pipefitting, and pipe welding (and instrument fitting and duct fitting and millwright-mechanic and, and...) and I find every aspect of the trades to be interesting. I have to admit, I had a great deal of fun on the ironwork...

career advice

Hi guys, I have a situation I'd like some advice on. I'm currently working as a pipefitter pre-apprentice (for the last 7 months) with a chance to be accepted as a first year apprentice next september. I also just received my acceptance letter from the local ironworkers union accepting me as a first...

Re: Welding advice

I can see where you will make your target date of June 2015 for the 3-G easily. The 6-G is an entirely different ball game! Buying a welder is a big step forward! But you'll need a way to cut, and bevel your test plates. Then cut and bevel the pipe coupons. I'm glad to hear that, thanks. For the mo...

Welding advice

First off, I'd like to offer a heartfelt thanks to you guys for all the advice and tips you've given me so far, it's much appreciated :!: I'm currently working as a pre apprentice through the local pipefitters union, and I'm hoping to get in the September 2015 apprenticeship class. I'm taking a weld...

I have actually. I have about a thousand dollar limit, so I don't know if that's feasible for a generator welder.

In structural welding most of the time when testing the backing bar is required.
Well you certainly have a talent for it! I'd love to be capable of running a bead that nice...

Re: First time joining plate

This is by no means perfect, just acceptable. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/913/3PcoJC.jpg That's an amazing weld as far as I'm concerned. Can I ask how long it took you to get this proficient? I only get 2.5 hours of practice per week, and feel like it's nowhere near enough. What's ...

First time joining plate

Last night was my 4th 3 hour welding class, and first time welding plate together. This is 1/4" steel with a 70 ish degree included angle bevel and 1/8" land using a Lincoln Invertec 300. Root pass is done with 1/8" 6010 at 75 amps whip and pause/keyhole, and fill and cap were done wi...

First whip and pause beads

I had my 3rd arc welding class today, and I worked on beads using the whip and pause technique on a Lincoln Invertec 300 with 1/8" 6010 at 75 amps. Other than running too cold ( welding instructor insisted) what do you guys think? I know I need to stack the puddles closer like in the bottom bea...

Re: Help me find a welder

I just got one of these a few months ago. It welds 6010 really nice 8-) . I wish it would wet out 7018 just a little bit more  , but not to bad. I got it on Amazon FOB my front porch for $294.36 http://www.everlastgenerators.com/product/tig-stick/powerarc-300 That's a great looking welder. Wh...

Re: Help me find a welder

If you only have 40 amp service, in my opinion, it would be easy to overload your service. If you have a older electrical electrical I would recommend updating you electrical service to include a minimum of a new run for a dedicated outlet for a welder. The reason I recommend this is a older electr...

Help me find a welder

I'm eager to pick up a home welder so I can get some more practice in. My house has 40 amp service to the breaker. Are there any DC stock welders that I can run at home? If not, how about mig and or TIG? At school I've been working with 1/8" 6010 on a Lincoln Invertec 350. ETA- My BIL told me I...

Seeking critique and advice

I just started attending stick welding class at the local fitters hall, and so far I've done 2 X 2.5 hour sessions over 2 weeks, and I'm using a Lincoln Invertec 350 at 73-78 amps with 1/8" 6010 rods. I am learning a lot about rod angle, travel speed, and arc gap, but I feel like I'm not progre...

Hi guys

I was referred to the forum after watching some youtube vids on the 6G Tig welding test. I was recently hired as a pre-appprentice through the local Pipefitter's Union. I'm hoping to get a head start on my welding skills, so I'm signed up for a 5 month beginners Arc Welding class in August. Any advi...
