Re: Tungsten trouble

I had the same trouble with the same electrodes from the same place when I first got them. Switched to another from the same pack and the problem went away. I figure I had a bad one. Still don't know what was going on and have lost track of the "bad one". :?

IMO, the fittings would be a waste of your time and money, not to mention, the high probability of your furniture to have a nice rattle when you're done.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Makes perfect sense to me, and yes I am right handed. I tried to stay as steady as I could and think with more hood time things would improve. This is an addition to a winch stand with 4" added. There was about a 1/2" gap to fill, so there are a few passes under the weave. (glad you can't ...

Thanks Jonathan, torch straight down. This was on 1/4" so I assumed that I wasn't pushing enough rod into the puddle(1/16) 150 amps, 3/23 2%lanth, hotter than the hubs of Hell, but more likely lack of hood time. :)

Re: Cleaning Aluminum

Amen!! , as I've said before, I'm self taught on TIG, started on Alum. Short "stick-out", gas to high, amps to low...etc. These issues have been addressed for the most part. I fix boats so things need to be strong and I get nervous when I see my welds. Nothing has come back yet, knock on w...

Edit in RE: aeroplain: When I was in school there was a chatty fellow who liked to interupt me while I was lit up. I made it real clear this was going to be a problem for him if he didn't knock it off. Some people need to be reminded of the obvious. They have all been alerted to the "ha...

Re: Miller Dynasty 200DX

As a total guess, I'd say you're welding to cold. I say this because when I first started teaching myself it's what I did ALOT.
I was scared to blow a hole, or create something worse than when I started. Once I cranked up the amps a bit things started to go smoother.

Re: TIG weld cleaning on stainless steel by hand

If you have a drill, you can chuck up a dowel that has a cut the long way down the dowel. In the slit, put a length of rag into it and wrap it flat around the dowel. Inexpensive polishing compound can be had at the local hardware store.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

I work in boat repair, so welding is only a small part of my job. All the dust and paint over-spray makes for a challenging environment when I do get to weld. Nothing is ever clean, rarely on the bench, and out of position can be an understatement. The first time I ever TIG'ed was on my belly, arms ...

What and how did you polish your welds. Great job.
"Perfect-it"#1 polishing compound and a buffer (wool pad). Seems to clean easily.

Re: Lincoln Precision TIG Problem

Amps sound to low, and stick-out seems to short. I had electrode burn back until I turned the balance up to 80-90; that, and chucked the pure Tungsten and got some 2% Lanth.

Made this small tank today for a bicycle that a guy I know is fitting with a 49cc engine. .050 5000 series, filler neck is unknown thickness 6061. Bends made in the Vise.
