Setting up for back purge

ok I've said it before and ill say it again, I'm so noob its becoming ridiculous and I think the local welding supplier punishes the newer employees into serving me so they can deal with my stupid questions..... So i walked in and told them i wanted to back purge some 304 ss pipe I'm turning into an...

How/when/what to preheat?

Like the title says..... Why would I preheat a work piece? Is it something a back yarder like me would do if I'm welding up thin 3mm aluminium or is it more of a 3/4" thick "thing" Is it limited to alloy and exotic stuff or would you do it with mild steel and stainless? Lastly, are we...

Re: Wandering Arc on Stainless

So this is the job piece, the 4" 304 pipe slips into the flange really snug. I guess you would call it a lap joint; I'm using a 3/32 electrode with a #6 cup and gas lens @ 40amp with pure argon I've had arc wander before but this was beyond a joke. I resorted to making a puddle on the pipe, dro...

Re: Wandering Arc on Stainless

Thanks for the reply guys much appreciated, like I said in the op that I was rushed for time and literally had a hour to spare and couldn't take a photo as the part was tacked and bolted under the car.

I will take a pic shortly

Cheers

Wandering Arc on Stainless

Hi, I was out in the garage earlier and had a hour spare so thought i would quickly tack some stainless exhaust together, the rate I'm building this thing is like a bend a fortnight so its taking forever but anyways.... one part of the job was to tack the 1.6mm 304 SS pipe to a stainless Vband flang...

Re: Cutting Perfect angles on pipe Mandrel bends

Oh I now see the confusion haha. ONDGAS is my number plate on my race car...it's a Propane powered turbo six cylinder, and makes it easy to remember the million different sites that require a username. Thanks Otto, seems I'm screwed then! Being a beginner I'm finding fit up to be messing up my welds...

Re: Cutting Perfect angles on pipe Mandrel bends

thanks for that, I am Australian so thats convenient!!! what i don't get is what happens if one leg of the bend is longer than the other? As you guys know mandrel bends are not always made to the highest tolerances which would basically mean that that tool-as good as it is-is pretty much useless, al...

Re: My poor attempt at being a TIG welder! HELP

thanks for your time and reply Oscar and GreinTime,

how do you guys determine what size cup/lens to use and when to use a gas lens and when not?

Am i right in thinking its best to use the biggest gas lens possible given the room?

when is big too big?

Re: My poor attempt at being a TIG welder! HELP

You see. The thing I don't understand is on that picture you posted above, you can clearly see how you have started and stopped, but it's still very uniform, how does that happen? Obviously once you stop the material cools and wen you start again it changes again..... Yet how is there a uniform pudd...

Re: My poor attempt at being a TIG welder! HELP

thanks noddybrian, i never thought of welding it in short sections......so your saying this would halt the sugar? I didn't purge because of the cost factor and because i didn't think it would cause that much of a restriction to flow inside the pipe. And i tack a few sections at a time and so using co...

kemppi 2300 mls foot pedal

Hi I'm new to tig and pretty much know nothing, I've had my kemppi for a few years and have been teaching myself as I go to see me through each little project. I mainly use it to fab custom parts on my race car as I'd rather do it twice myself and learn along the way than pay to have it done. I'm ti...
