..when and why will i use the dc function... tom, most stick welding is done on DC. Get yourself some 6010 (or 6011) and some 7018. 1/8" rod is a good all around size. Hook it up DC reverse polarity (negative ground, positive electrode). I do ALL of my stick welding on DC. About the only thing...

I use 2% thoriated tungsten for all of my DC TIG welding...mild steel, stainless, chrome-moly, etc...have been for almost thirty years. I prefer pure tungsten for aluminum (nothing personal Jody). I have the same machine...Lincoln Square Wave TIG 175 Pro...actually, it's my second one. I've never had this problem and I've used them A LOT...for over ten-eleven years. Interesting.
