What type of weave would you suggest for Flux Core 3g?
I am job hunting, and one of the tests I am liable to be doing very soon is a 3g flux core. I haven't been given any more specifics than that, so I don't know if it is going to be like the AWS D1.1 or what. I'm assuming it will be similar, until the person at the whatever gives me more info. If it i...

Burf, jump accross the pond and don't bring your passport. You'll be declared and illegal and qualify for a Govt. education grant that will pay for your school and housing. Once you complete your education you can ask to be deported and they'll buy you a plane ticket and send you home. Happens ever...

Re: Study material for the entry level welder certification(
sschefer, I am a student member of AWS, there is no student chapter in my town, and I have looked over the AWS website trying to find a book that I should be studying. There was one I ran across that was called something like 'a guide to training an entry level welder'. Well, that costs money, and t...

Thanks, Sarge. That is very helpful information. Yes, it will likely be 035. Also solid wire and gas. CO2, I think? Been awhile.

Suggested volts and wire speed for 1/8" mild steel, 2f / 3f?
I will be welding (MIG) up some 1/8" mild steel soon for a test. 2f and 3f positions. It's been a little while since I MIG welded, and I don't have access to a MIG welder at this time. Please tell me, what voltage setting and wire speed setting do you recommend starting at? (I know to experimen...

Study material for the entry level welder certification(AWS)
Does anyone know what the best material is to study for the written examinations that are a part of the entry level welder certification for AWS? There are several modules, and the safety one can only be passed with a grade of 100%. I have been told by a master welder that the wording of the questio...

Re: confused about this helmet: do all autodarkening filters
Thanks for the tip. :) I gotta say, when I was calling around for a pair of Tillman 850S gloves a few days ago, the only local folk who had them in stock were airgas and red ball oxygen. the local airgas shop discounted them down to 15 something, and the red ball oxygen shop quoted me 23. Red ball s...

Re: confused about this helmet: do all autodarkening filters
Ah, so in other words, they have listed it incorrectly as a passive helmet. I didn't see any mention of batteries in the ad, so it confused me. But the ad is pretty skinny all the way round, anyways.
Thanks, jpence.

confused about this helmet: do all autodarkening filters...
...require electricity? The reason I ask is I was looking at this pipeliner helmet (on a website, not in person) that is being sold with an 'autodarkening filter'. I know what a lens is, or a glass is. But a filter? In theory, I know what it is. But is an auto darkening 'filter' really an auto darke...

Best helmet, pipe welding, under $100?
Hi. Looking for recommendations for a really decent helmet (complete) for under 100 dollars. It would be used for pipe welding (oil field). I'm a woman and my head is smaller than most guys, so it has to ratchet down. I saw the white 'Pipeliner' today that is so popular. I may end up getting that on...

Re: TIGGING mild steel, 3F, t-joint...a few questions
Test is in the morning. I can retake it a couple of times if I fail, but if someene can answer any of my questions, it would be helpful. I really don't want to fail.

TIGGING mild steel, 3F, t-joint...a few questions
So I'm going to take a test in a couple of days, tigging 1/8" thick mild steel, t joint, vertical. I have been using 3/32 tungsten and same size filler for 2F(horizontal tee), @ 93A, DCEN, with foot pedal. I have been walking the cup with 2F position tee joint. My questions are: Should I use di...

Re: looking for info on root welding technique (MIG)
Well, how about the root? 8" steel pipe, open root 1/8" gap, lands are around 1/16" after interior flash is filed off, 33 degree angle bevels, nice and clean. Do I push or pull the root? I plant to use 16.8 for the root, and 17.7 for fill and maybe cap, too.
Thanks.
Thanks.

looking for info on root welding technique (MIG)
A video, a page of text, illustrations...just something to explain the proper technique for laying a root weld. Pipe or plate, at least 1/2" thick. I just started a pipe class, and we are going to use MIG. Haven't started welding yet, still cutting out pipe sections with the beveling machine. I...
