Re: When should you use electrode negative? I've been told

Would be cool to get one of those high speed cameras like they have on myth busters and film each polarity at 40k frames per second or whatever speed they have

Layout Fluid

Firstly, NO THIS ISNT LIKE BLINKER FLUID. THIS IS AN ACTUAL PRODUCT. Lol, just felt like I had to get that out there. I was watching a video on a website (just happened to be Adam Savage if you have heard of him) and was explaining how to fabricate a little holder for his leatherman. Basically he sp...

Re: PIPE dream come true

Hey bro what did you think of that XMT? I ran one for a while and I hated it compared to my little PoS Everlast. Guess that stuff they say about Miller is right gotta run 20 amps hotter compared to anything else. Just don't think you should be sticking an 1/8" 6010 at 110 amps.

Re: Light blue ribbon in the finsihed weld

Maybe someone else can respond with better advice but I've tried to weld a lot of 1/8" with 3/32 6011 and even at less than 50 amps I was burning holes through it, unless I moved REALLy fast...faster than I wanted to. But any lower amperage and I couldnt maintain an arc. I would really like to ...

Running 3/32 rods on 10 guage is sure to give crazy results. Maybe try something smaller? 5/64 or 1/16?

Otto you've been on plenty of "regular" jobsites. How would you describe the differance between a regular jobsite and the shipyards? On the helpful side-In my opinion, and I've worked both shop jobs and field jobs, the first week or so you just kinda gotta get your feet wet on that jobsite...

Re: Hand files on stainless steel???

I was taught that you need a seperate set of gloves, brushes, files, and grinding wheels for stainless, carbon, and aluminum and you don't interchange them. As for affecting the corrosion resistance I'll defer that to someone else, as it was explained to me the reason for using seperate tools for ea...

Re: Welding tables how thick of a top

Personally I feel less important is the thickness of the top and more important is whats underneath. If you reinforce the hell out of the underneath of the top you don't need nearly as much thickness. I used 1" sch 40 pipe for slats spaced at 6" on center and some 14 guage scrap for the to...

Re: 1/16" rods vertical up.

When you are welding 1" thick metal, your bevelling it first down to 1/8" and sloping up the sides. So in reality your welding a piece of 1/8" metal on the root pass(its a bit more complicated than that but thats the basic of it) then filling it in with your rod. The problem with 1/16...

Re: 1/16" rods vertical up.

You could also use whatever means that are availible to you to preheat the base metal as high as possible. That will aid in penetration. Think small oxyacetylene torch(or MAPP or propane since its safer). Maybe even some kind of induction heater. Any heat will help. Might also try 5/64 rods. I've he...

Re: Mild Steel

Hey, I should clarify, the school machines were ac buzz boxes, so the rods must have been 6011s, if that makes a particular difference. Have never used one on a job, should buy some one day. :-) Mick Ive run 6010 and 6011, and I prefer 6011. It's an easier rod to run, performs very similarly to 601...

helper=apprentice. Basically he does all the grunt work you dont want to do. Like go to the roach coach and buy your lunch for you. Or pick up the tools while you sit around BS'n with the other welders.

Re: Mild Steel

Mike-I've found that depends on the machine. My machine at home is a newer inverter with a dig function, and I can bury the rod all day and it wont stick. The machines at the welding school I'm at trying to get certified are millers and I'm not a fan. I'm stickin the damn thing all the time. Tried t...

Re: Question about removing magnetism from pipe before weldi

It makes sense in an oddball sort of way. Usually you would wrap the work lead around the work a couple of times to alleviate the magnetism...somehow the pipe has picked up the opposite charge, so wrapping the stinger lead around it does the job the work lead usually does. Thats a good welding tip :...

Re: bead color

If your getting porosity with TIG it's usually a cleaning issue or a gas issue. Make sure your base metal/filler is nice and dry to. Might try preheating the base metal as well to make sure you drive off any moisture. Other than that be sure your torch angle isn't too step or something isn't blowing...

Here's my first flat weld. Don't be ashamed to show pics of your welds. All of us learned by making bad welds, asking for help, practice some more, and practice some more. I've got some scrap drill pipe, I might just whip up a saddle joint, and show you how I would do it. IMG_1461.JPG Hey that look...
