Re: Xv700 frame work

I think I'm not going miter the ends of the tubing to fit the surface of the back bone. I'm going to notch them to fit on another piece that runs the width of the back bone.

Re: Xv700 frame work

The bar in the middle that was the brace for the original saddle seat was replace with the straight piece for aesthetics as well more importantly to brace the frame.

Re: Xv700 frame work

I'm sorry I typed that wrong. The Dom is 1" and the wall thickness is 1/8". I don't follow the miter the Dom to go past the shock mount. This is the frame that I want to build. I'm really just wanting to know the best way to tie in the Dom into the backbone. I still welcome any other info,...

Because I'm building a custom bike. All this is doing is raising the seat hight. I'm not moving the shock mounts.

Xv700 frame work

This weekend or next I'm going to cut the top tail piece off my bike and weld some 1" 1/8 wall Dom tubing. About an 2" above the top shock mounts is where I'm cutting. I want to run the Dom tubing into the backbone of the bike. I'm using a 3/32 2% lanthinate and 1/8 309 filler. One problem...

Re: How to fill in holes blown in SS pipe?

What machine/settings are you using? Panel controlled amps or pedal controlled? If you can reach inside with aluminum or copper you can use that to back the hole and make it easier, but can be done without backing, just watch your heat input. Machine Miller diversion 180 I was tacking without fille...

How to fill in holes blown in SS pipe?

I was tacking up some ss exhaust and blew one hole because I had the amps too high, even though I put the first tac in. I then lowered the amps had no problem with a few more tacs. Then the second hole was from two pieces that were uneven. Diameter of the holes 3/16" to 1/4". How do I fill...

Re: Welding Schools prerequisites?

A iron workers union is the only one I can find near by and I have yet to find a trade school yet. I'm going to ask around, I know a couple of folks they may know. If I have time today I'm going to go ask about the training with no degree, if not Monday. Thanks for the info.

Re: Looking for a new helmet

The save phace helmets look nice, but that's kind of expensive for just two sensors. Now saying that I have never used one with more than two. I like them also because they have more choices than black and flames.

Welding Schools prerequisites?

What is the method of learning how to weld good/great/professional, get a job doing it that pays better than the dead end job I have now? All the local community colleges require prerequisites, and I didn't do so hot in those classes. So for me to be able to go to welding and cutting classes I would...

Re: Looking for a new helmet

I have it on 9 and 10 and cant see anything when I hit the switch. Before pushing the pedal I can see everything, of course but when I hit the pedal I can see the arc but not where I'm putting it and can't find the filler rod sometimes. I would like to see where I'm going and what I just did. I know...

Looking for a new helmet

I got this helmet from harbor freight and I can't see anything with it. So I think that's a part of my problem with mig and tig. Anyways looking for nice helmets under $180, any suggestions. There some speedglas for $179 on weldersupply.com. Thanks

Re: Welding stainless exhaust?

I got the rear stock flange attached to a 180 pipe last night. I think my purge didn't go too well, but it doesn't look too nasty on the inside like the one I did without the gas. It just looks like the welds went through to other side, not black and sooty. I should have known better but I use duck ...

Re: Motorcycle tank repair, too much for me?

I've tried the arm thing, I may try again. The thing about it is since there is a long neck from the factory inside the tank and I added to it on the top??? My attempt before failed couldn't ever get any leverage because the long fuel neck and the center ridge for fitting on the frame. It's probably...

Motorcycle tank repair, too much for me?

This is something I would love to learn how to do, it might be too soon. I'm not that good yet. I have couple of dents in a 5 gallon motorcycle tank. I've had the inside coated and I've been fighting my hvlp set up to get the moisture out. The week I finished my cooper cooling lines for the compress...

Re: Welding stainless exhaust?

Where is a good place to buy supplies online? I may have misunderstood you, but the guy at airgas said that 1/16 tungsten would fit in a #7 cups medium gas lens. It have to be a #6 cup. Anyways they don't ever have much to choose from in the store, so where can I get some of this stuff online? Thank...

Re: Welding stainless exhaust?

No magnet yet. It's the front header of a virago witch is a double wall pipe the inside is 1.5" and the outer is 2". The part I need is a 2" flange that fits inside the jug exhaust port and tappers down to the 1.5" inner pipe. It's covered in rust. I guess stainless could rust in...

Welding stainless exhaust?

I have Miller dynasty 180 with a gas lens. Need some advice on welding 304 stainless exhaust 16g. I can't remember what rods I have at the moment. What's a cheap way to purge? I nee to weld the first two inches of the original exhaust on my header. I'm not sure what kind of metal it is but I'm certa...

Re: cast steel holes filler?

I appreciate the responses. That's what I was thinking, but I was in a rush. We're out of gas for the torch and I don't have any rods. So I use the mig to fill them. I drilled two small holes in my lower triple tree clamp to mount new steering stops. They didn't turn out like I wanted. One was threa...

Re: Third time to TIG(Critique)

Thanks Johnathan.

Machine is a Miller diversion 180, I'm using the pedal now. Like it a ton better than the hand. Its tricky though.
Tungsten is 3/32"x7" green
AC 180amps the highest my machine goes.
Cfh is at 18-20
Cup is a 7 thinking about buying a gas lens.
