Re: #20 CK Cup set up for thin wall tube
turbo+ mild steel = wasted time. not starting a war but I have many people that think the ''lean is mean'' principle works for them. they never buy exhaust systems, turbos or manifolds. but changing pistons is like changing oil to them

I don't believe that mild steel is the material of choice for this kind of project,

Re: Air compressor noise talk
Gamble, The compressor here at work is 9500 HP, loud can't even describe it. :) The intake on a small compressor actually breaks the sound barrier every cycle that's why its louder. You can usually add a filter likes on a small engine to alieviate some of the noise. Len holy cow, I could not imagin...

Re: Air compressor noise talk
they do make intake mufflers for air compressors, I installed one on the 20 hp compressor in my shop, you can barely hear it run in the service bays. when you are in the basement you can have a conversation over it and not yell, I think the huge 7 9/16'' diameter low pressure piston adds to the quie...

if it is the same as my 211 with mvp and autoset......never use the autoset. the ground clamp that was included with mine was substandard in my opinion so I swapped out for a brass one

no offense, but you are looking to do top quality work?? why buy less than a top quality machine. you obviously have the back ground to do top quality work why ask about buying a low quality machine?

Re: Filler Material to plug hole in wheel rim?
MIG, TIG, Stick, Or Gas? I'd use a grade 8 bolt sawed off as long as your wheel is thick, and TIG with Hastelloy W. Be aware that some vehicle applications you are not allowed to weld on wheels at all. I don't know what your wheels are made of, (hence the Hastelloy W) I scrapped some truck wheels, ...

I believe most factory exhaust is made from 409 stainless, but I have never gone very far as to find out for surehacadacalopolis wrote:Thx for your addition to this.
I'm assuming 409 is suitable enough for rust resistance to meet my needs.
Rather than the more expensive 304.

Dang,I was hoping you weren't going to say that. I have in laid in a pile a fab builders kit of 14G aluminized MS 2.5" mandrel bends. Bought over a year ago. This was my ticket to a small project with the help of a HF bandsaw. For temperature concern; My plan was to wrap the downpipe and manif...

Lesson of the day: the older mechanical 7.3's were not the "powerstroke." Most refer to them as the idi. Mains reasons for powerstroke over idi: power, reliability, parts availability, easier diagnostics, etc. Flyinfairlane, what are you using on those mounts for the inserts? Sent from my...

What more do you guys think about me getting some stainless straight pipe for the cat? Brokeitagain makes a good point considering his related work experience. I am leaning towards one more turn; Which is 304 V-band clamps instead of traditional triangle or 2 bolt flanges. I will have 3 welded star...

Re: Custom Exhaust MIG GAS
I install lots of cats at my shop, unfortunately I have to use aluminized pipe, customers almost never want to pay extra for stainless pipe, which is fine for me, I know they will be back in 2-3 years to pay me to replace what rotted away because they wanted to "save" money

I can say as a mechanic don't bother mixing aluminized pipe with a catalytic converter there is lots of info about this out there. converters are made out of stainless for a specific reason, does anyone have a link as to why??

Re: Keeping cool. How to do it
This is interesting. Usually the copper windings of a motor form the fixed stator. The shaft spins inside the stator windings by induction. So I am not fully understanding the concept of welding the shaft to the windings. Some photos of what you are trying to do would be informative for us to give ...

maybe its the beer and im venting lol. no pics, yet but I seem to be over cooking my welds. too little amperage and too much dwell time (spending too much time on a bead), and I can not manage to keep a tungsten out of the puddle, when I dip a tungsten what is the correct way to get a stuck one out?...

Re: bending sch. 10 stainless
If the material's free, why not give it a shot? Sch. 10 is a pretty heavy wall for tight bends, and is probably 300 series. I don't recall seeing 400-series in pipe schedules, and 400s bend much better (and are tube sizes, available in thin walls). I look forward to your results, and what works bes...
