Don't waste your time, money, and eyes or cheap helmets. I tried 2 HF units before getting my Lincoln Electric Viking 3350 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ZF7JD6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005ZF7JD6&linkCode=as2&tag=inm06-20&linkId=A6E7D...

How to replace a DINS connector

Think I might need to replace the DINS connector on my TIG torch lead. To make things more fun I have a valve torch where the gas connects into the base of the plug so that there is just one flex hose to torch. "PTA-17V TIG torch with Ultra-Flex™ cable and Twist Mate™ adapter" Would love t...

Re: Paint over mill scale or remove it?

Thanks for the extra info Jonathan, I doubt that I would have realized that the recoat "window" was just that, an open and close window before you have to wait for it to cure.

Really appreciate the extra help.

Have a good weekend,

Re: Paint over mill scale or remove it?

One thing I would be concerned about is the paint will still outgas and cure for up to 30 days after application Didn't realize that. How long would you recommend waiting to paint over rattle can primer? And how long would you recommend waiting to let Rustoleum cure before putting into a foam "...

Re: Paint over mill scale or remove it?

@Steve - PVC in a size that would actually fit inside the cover is not stiff enough. The cover has to be able to support up to 2 feet of snow. It is standard for a good quality spa cover to have a metal frame in it to support the weight of snow and pooling water from heavy rains. @Jonathan - Thanks ...

Re: Starting out on my own soon. Questions?

Just a quick experience heads up on Craigslist... I recently sold a big dog crate and the first person to contact me refused to meet me in a public parking lot. Given that I was only asking $50 for it, I'd be really careful if I was expecting any real money to change hands. Grocery store parking lot...

But the most "industrial" quality (metal) one I could find was like $45. Sorry, just principle & the fact that I had those recepticle boxes just collecting dust in the garage - I just had to enlist them. Ouch! I've had my heavy duty one for so long I didn't realize how much they cost ...

Re: Cheap trick - more shielding with med gas lens

You might want to rethink getting a real gas lens and proper lens cup because it will pay for itself the first time you refill your argon cylinder. Running 70 amps, I only need about 10-12 CFH with a #6 cup and standard gas lens on my PTA-17v torch. Also, it seems like your "screen" should...

At first when I saw this post I thought that it sounded like an interesting idea, but that it would be too much time and effort to actually do... then I just realized that if there is a high school welding and/or fab program in your area that it might be a nice way to get some of those kids some exp...

I know that this is late, but might be interesting for fine tuning... you might want to look at that bolt and double nut on the left side of the motor mount, if it is like my miter saw, that is a tilt adjustment bolt.

Re: TIG vs. MIG for hardness & Silicon Bronze

I think I saw the same video and assumed that "harder" was referring to effort not physical hardness of the metal itself. The annealing point is interesting though because I've started doing (trying) some metal art and annealing is part of the process and I don't get the feeling that my pr...

Paint over mill scale or remove it?

So, I am working on a small project building a new support frame for our spa cover. I removed all the mill scale before starting to work because I knew it would be easier to do before I got started simply because it will be awkward after the frame is complete. So, today I noticed a few spots that ha...

Have thought about making a wooden tube bender for a while (so many thoughts so little ability to work...), but the ention of delrin was interesting so I took a peek on eBay and it looks like you can get some pretty good sized delrin rod for much less than what a set of metal dies would cost and the...

That's me... always a day late and a dollar short.

That being said... my point was really for the odd job every now and again vs someone doing it consistently enough to warrant spending bucks on the special rod holder.

I would like to try TriMix or whatever it is that DGP came out with a year or two ago, if for nothing else just to compare it to e3! You can get a free sample of TriMix at the DGP website: http://www.diamondground.com/request-a-sample/ I have a 1/16th along with another sample of their 1.5% Lanthan...

Makes sense. I was recently cleaning some metal with a knotted wire wheel in my angle grinder. It clipped the cord and ripped it in half while wrapping the cord up tight against the spindle. I'd hate to see what damage could happen if a chainsaw were to get through a log hit a metal bar and then sta...

So while lusting after a Hypertherm Powermax 30, I stumbled across this whole carbon arc gouging process and saw that there was a special stinger for it that has air holes in it to direct the compressed air down the rod. But... couldn't you just take an air blow gun from the compressor and direct it...

The finished product looks good, but I'm curious what the balance feels like at the rear axle? Is it easy to tip it backwards? Also, what way are you planning to cut logs on it? Cutting piece hanging off the end, or similar to the sample piece you put up and then cutting down or sideways? If so, I'd...

Re: Differences in air cooled tig torches

I think my OCD likes the way I can see the puddles form on each piece of metal and then flow together and control how the puddle moves the direction that I want it with TIG. I can see A puddle with stick, I just can't see that it is melting both pieces of metal together the way I can with TIG. And I...
