No one testing method is going to tell you everything. I've heard plenty of welders say they'd rather take an x-ray test than a bend test.

And on thinner stuff, I like to get it relatively hot and move fast.

I wouldn't worry about trying to get it in a certain number of passes. If you try and fill it up too fast, say, by using wire that's too big for what you're doing, there's a good chance of getting lack of fusion and voids.

If it takes an extra pass or two, so be it. Don't try to force it.

For holes that big I would either use the lay wire technique and weave it, or run small beads on one side and keep stacking them until the hole is filled.

If it's an AWS/ASME/API certification they should have a WPS for you to go by. This will outline all your parameters.

There are no requirements for practice, though it is encouraged.

If you're going in for a certification then you should know exactly what the test will be.

I'll echo what MinnesotaDave said that hot and fast is usually the best way; insofar as my experiences. If you do get an unusually/uncomfortably large gap, I've had success with bridging the gap.
