Re: Setting up a MIG machine correctly

1/4" plate @ 30v is to high. Set machine to 23 volts @ 380 and adjust from there. 75/25 gas .035 wire. mage sure you have no oil or dirt or other crap on the plate. All doors to shop closed and fans off, wind is your worse enemy. let me know if this helps. good luck.

Re: Stainless Tank Welding

Are you trying to keep the plate flat so you can stand it up on end and still be sturdy?? There are quite a few ways to achieve this. Have you figured it out yet?
if not give us a post and we will be more than happy to help.

Re: had a good run on 3g mig today

not bad at all. seems as though the Zs were a bit tight and weld a bit cold. but should pass. I like weaving using like a u patern. to help the consistancy you could also draw a line down each side of the filler before you cap, sort of guidlines for the width of the cap. makes good practice. Dont th...

Re: preparing old, dirty metal for welding

ID red or clear pvc cleaner or any degreaser. problem is that any good degreaser is highly flammable but does evaporate quickly, like break cleaner. after the piece is clean let it sit for a while if your that worried about it.

Re: Welding different thicknesses?????????

Keep most of the heat on the thicker piece. Blend the puddle slow and feed the rod to compinsate the over heat on the thinner material. Basically puddle up on the thicker stuff the creep over the thinner stuff dropping the rod as needed. the 2nd pass should be a bit easier. hope this helps.

Re: Welding 304 SS exhaust headers

when the weld comes out looking black and grey that sometimes indicates too much heat... Nice sharp point and enough heat to puddle nice without having to feed to fast. could always polish it with the hook and loop pads from grainger.

Re: TIG SS pipe estimating

I've got old school estimate sheets that are for steel arc weld and go up to 12". They say 4.6 hrs per 12" joint. 4.5 hours for a 12" flange stick welded? Thats like double the time it takes maybe more. If you use those times for tig you should be OK. as for the rod it depends on how...

gotta agree with Dustelf, 2% ceriated tungsten (Orange) and 1.5% lanthanated (Gold) are the one I find best for all around tig although 2% thoriated (Red) seems to last longer.

Re: Please help a noob.

Dont let these guys get you down. body work will be harder with a stick welder, but what do you think people did before mig welders huh? If you have a harbour frieght nearby, go there and pick up some 1/16 welding rods. i think you should use 6011, but a halfass substitute is 6013(this rod will be ...
