Re: First Time Successfully Welding Aluminum !!!

Really nice welds there..."stack 'o dimes" all the way. I have been welding the inside of a box about that size and it is a pain to get in the tight corners. I saw one of Jody's videos where he demoed the stubby torch kit and gas lens set up. WOW,WOW,WOW what a difference the combo. made. ...

Re: what are the scratch start settings on a welder

Thanks guys. I did crank up the amps to the max which was 180 and the steel i had was 1/8th inch. Also, I think things might be pointing to the potentiometer or perhaps where the remote pedal plug fits into the machine. I only say this because I unscrewed the plug for the remote and then screwed it ...

what are the scratch start settings on a welder

Sorry guys for such a basic question here but I have a Miller Syncrowave SD 180 and I think the potentiometer is out in the remote foot pedal. So, I'm trying to do some troubleshooting here. When I'm in DCEN, amps =130,1/8th inch steel is clean and ground is good, the arc appears but after a minute ...

Feed rod technique question..do you push or dip???

I've watched a thousand videos and read tons of stuff but I haven't quite figured out if the best way to "feed" the rod is by either just dipping it into the puddle or actually feeding/pushing the rod into the puddle. Can someone weigh in on what the best technique is? I've found that push...

Re: tig welding steel problem, the arc isn't getting hot enough

Hmm, ok i will check that. I'm not sure how clean steel has to be tig weld it. I wiped it down good with some cleaner and it isn't rusty. I didn't grind the spot i'm going to weld down to bare new metal. I will try the grounding thing to make sure that is happening.

tig welding steel problem, the arc isn't getting hot enough

I am trying to tig weld some 1/8 inch steel tube. I have a miller 180 sd which should easily be able to do the job. I'm using 2% thoriated tungsten that is 3/32 , I have the selector lever set to DCEN and my amps are at 130. The tungsten isn't balled at the end it is at a point and it is ground in t...

What to clamp to?

when tig welding stuff like aluminum usually your are doing relatively small stuff. What do you guys clamp too? I try to clamp directly to most stuff but at times it is too small and either the clamp from the welder gets in the way or it gets in the way of my arm moving around with the torch or the ...
