Re: TIG cast Aluminum

CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. What I had to do was wire brush make a cleaning pass with torch no filler to boil up crap and clean again. Finally added filler and ground the bead down and repeat till I get a clean base its a pain sometimes but it can be done.

Re: Problem for me

Well I shot myself in the nuts on this one. Spent all day grinding and cleaning finally tonight start to weld and it sucks. I have no puddle control the material spits and on up hill the filler will not flow it just blobbed and dropped no matter how much torch angle. I am so disappointed in it. So I...

Re: Problem for me

My first suggestion to my friend was to grind out old welds but due to the amount of work and going backwards he wasn't to happy with my suggestion. I told him that was the only way I felt was a propoer approach to avoid a band aid situation. just thought some of the experts here might have a differ...

I have a friend who started a car project and alot of the welding he has done is with a 115V flux core mig. argon flow settings

When I went to school my instructors had me use only a gas lense. I have a situation where I need to use a standard body non gas lense.I usually set cfh 12 to 15 with the gas lense what would be a good starting point for a standard body? Steel welding.

overheated tig welded steel

If I start a weld on steel and stop about 2 inches its beautiful. When I restart or don't stop it ends up grey. I know Its too hot. Is it a balance between speed and heat, am I going to slow? I try to concentrate on good penetration ,puddle flow, and eliminating undercuts. What am I missing? example...

Re: carbon steel spitting

It just spit a small piece of molten like metal from the joining edge of the t joint and went in the cup and basically fused i guess is the word my tungsten gas lense and cup to the point where they were all stuck together and I could not independently disassemble the torch parts.

carbon steel spitting

Long story short 5/16 flat plate t-weld and about 5 seconds after I lit up it spit a couple of small chunks out of the joint and welded my tungsten lense and cup together. Material appeared to be clean enough wiped with acetone clean tungsten and all that. What the hell it was no big deal just chunk...

How do you stay sharp? Went through 4 months of school to learn tig welding. I try to practice atleast 6 to 8 hours a week. My primary job at work is NOT tig welding. Sometimes a job comes around and I can't find my ass from a hole in the ground it is frustrating. I practice on different types of ma...

Re: hello im a newb here

The best advice I can give as a semi noob is practice, practice , practice. My main job at work is NOT welding but I try to TIG atleast 6 to 10 hours a week to try and get better. Usually I go in on the weekend when the shop is closed grab some junk and weld.Try different positions, thicknesses and ...
