I haven't done any welding on my frames, but I have read several times that you should disconnect the CDI box.

Re: Am I harming my eyes?

It fits. I just wish you could move the helmet out slightly farther on the headgear to give it a bit more clearance. It's not a problem, just a bit puzzling as to why it would be that way.... :?:

Re: Am I harming my eyes?

I have had my Digital Elite for 3 1/2 weeks now. I think it works great for MIG, TIG and stick. It is the only helmet I have tried that has not flashed me doing TIG. The head gear is comfortable, however, it does not stay up very well. Oddly, it does not fit over my Miller respirator as well as my o...

Mine is a bit loud, but I don't find it obnoxious. Mine doesn't have an alarm. I think they came out with that feature just after I bought mine. Anyway, I've had no issues with it. It works great.

Re: Bench grinder stand

I made mine from an old brake drum off a logging truck. It's a beast and won't tip over when you lean on it to grind something heavy. It's easy to move around the shop with the casters.

Re: Plasma performance on thin stock?

I have cut lots of thin steel and aluminum with my Powermax 45. I have even cut sheet aluminum that was only .035" thick. In all cases it worked very well and was almost as clean as a saw cut. I looked seriously at the Millers but decided on the Hypertherm and I am glad that I did. Most of the ...

Re: Am I harming my eyes?

Second off, I've tried two Digital elites, and hated both of them. What did you hate about the digital elites? I was thinking of buying one because they went down to shade 8. I have a lot of trouble seeing on low amperage DC tig. Also, my other helmets don't always darken immediately while tig weld...

My 3/32 tungstens are Weldcraft and my 1/8 tungstens are HTP. Both split. I think I might try some Diamond Ground next.

Re: Splitting tungsten on AC

I have never broken the end off a messed up tungsten. I have always cut it off with the edge of a grinding wheel. I don't think that is the cause in my case. The splits that I have been seeing are more like the end of the tungsten is frayed. The splits don't go up very far - maybe about a millimeter...

Re: Splitting tungsten on AC

I have been having quite a bit of trouble with this lately as well. It has been happening with 3/32 and 1/8 2% lanthanated electrodes. Both are different brands too. I have experienced this on AC as well in the same amperage range but between 100 and 150hz. I would be very interested to hear what th...

Re: Removing Broken Skid Plate Bolt

Maybe I just didn't use enough amps, but it seemed to me that it would be easy to weld the stud into the hole as the washer was melting away. This was only a 10mm bolt, so perhaps it was too small for this procedure.....

Re: Removing Broken Skid Plate Bolt

The most important thing to consider is why the bolt broke off. If its rusted or heat corroded or just broken off by a mechanical force, you should be able to get it out. But if its galled or cross threaded or something similar, Its not coming out no matter what. Glad to be around people who can se...

Re: Removing Broken Skid Plate Bolt

I finally got around to this project today. I was not successful. Every time I got the washer and nut welded on, it just broke off. I think the problem was that there was not enough heat to fuse everything to the stud. When I cranked up the amps, then the washer would start to burn away. Obviously, ...

Re: Trimix On Mild Steel

Well, that settles that! :D Thanks for the info. I will enjoy it while I can, which probably won't be long because it is only a 50 cu/ft cylinder. When it's empty, I will trade it in for a 125 cu/ft Argon/CO2 cylinder. When I emptied my last Argon/CO2 cylinder, I traded it for some Helium. My LWS is...

Trimix On Mild Steel

I have a bottle of trimix gas that I bought years ago to try on stainless. I have only used it once as I rarely weld stainless. Now that I have a TIG welder, I am even less likely to use it. Is it OK to use the trimix on mild steel just to use it up? I have tried it, but I think that the argon/CO2 m...

Re: HTP invertig221

Not a big learning curve. The manual is good and easy to follow. You can download it from their website and have a look. There are lots of settings, so if I haven't used a feature for awhile, I often find myself having a quick look at the manual. You can also store welding programs, so once you get ...
