Re: TIG welding practice on mild steel, porosity problem

If I cast the bait out then you took it and ran with it lol PPE is no joke though - I'm done getting UV burns and scars from weld splatter. Had enough of that trying to MIG overhead on my car once upon a time. Leather gloves, sleeves, jeans, steel toes, handkerchief to cover the top of my head when ...

Re: TIG welding practice on mild steel, porosity problem

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'd like to get the technique down with gloves if possible - welding sunburn is not something I want to get into the habit of giving myself. It'll just take time I guess. Burned through my first 80 cu.ft of argon and a half pound of 1/16" 308L filler. Lots and l...

http://welding-tv.com/2013/11/12/tig-steel-drill/ Here's a good vid for you to watch. ~John Thanks John. I've watched that video many times, but I'm still pulling things out of it every time I watch....even more so now that I have a little experience trying to do it. I believe more practice is in o...

Re: TIG welding practice on mild steel, porosity problem

Charles, I am glad you figured it out, although I feel kinda dumb for not asking about your post-flow. Get some beads ran and post the pictures. -Jonathan It's something I should have checked as well, but my excitement got the best of me and I overlooked it. I got some good seat time in with it las...

Re: TIG welding practice on mild steel, porosity problem

So I think I might have solved the problem tonight. I did a couple things: 1) went back through my machine settings. there was no pre / post flow setup, so I put in about a half a second pre / and 5 seconds post to protect the tungsten 2) went from a #8 cup to a #6 cup 3) bumped it up from 10-12 cfh...

That's what happens when oxygen hits a white hot tungsten. Find the leak that others have pointed out.
And be sure to remove all the black off that tungsten before you fire it up again.
Could that explain why the 1/16" tungsten was arc flashing? Tungsten reacting with the oxygen?

Re: TIG welding practice on mild steel, porosity problem

Is the point of a gas lens to improve coverage with less flow, or just reduce turbulence? Ideally what should my flow rate be to provide adequate shielding? Since I'm just practicing I didn't want to have it cranked and wasting gas, so I set it at 10 CFH as a starting point. As mentioned above I did...

Re: TIG welding practice on mild steel, porosity problem

Thanks for the suggestions guys - I'll do another leak check tonight and grab another piece of steel and see if it does the same thing.

TIG welding practice on mild steel, porosity problem

Hey guys, I finally got the power run for my new welder and have been trying to do Jody's steel drill for the past two evenings. I have no prior TIG welding experience so I'm starting from scratch here. I'm welding on what I believe to be some A36 mild steel that I got from the scrap bin at work. It...

Re: Well pulled the trigger...

What are your first impressions? My tracking number shows it got to my local facility today and it will be here tomorrow Everything looked great after unboxing, seems to be very well constructed. Nothing feels "cheap" in any way. Fit and finish definitely on par (maybe even a little bette...

Re: Looking to buy a TIG welder, recommendations please

China will spiral back down to earth once its people wake up and start demanding a higher standard of living. Their place in the world is not sustainable much in the same way that ours isn't. Interested in impressions on the HTP though...what all have you welded with it and have you found the duty c...

Re: Looking to buy a TIG welder, recommendations please

Aside from the extra $1000 for the HTP 221, I'm not fond of the 20% duty cycle. The PowerPro 205 has a 60% duty cycle and comes with a 50 amp plasma cutter and stick holder. It also has the foot pedal, tig torch, spare consumables, regulators, etc, etc. My main reason for choosing the 205 over the ...

Re: Looking to buy a TIG welder, recommendations please

If you are interested in a good entry level machine, I have a 5 month old Miller 180 Diversion. For steel and stainless it is hard to beat. Aluminum requires a lot of heat! With 1/4" I haven't welded long before I start to push too far on the foot peddle as heat seems to be tapering off. I rea...

Looking to buy a TIG welder, recommendations please

Hey guys, First and foremost, I apologize for such a basic question. I'll start off by saying that I've been researching TIG welders for the better part of a year, and have a good feel for the various options, machine settings, techniques, etc. thanks mostly to Jody. Anyway, I'm a hobbyist that's in...

Howdy from Pittsburgh

Hello gents, My name's Chuck. I've been watching Jody's videos for quite a while now and figured it was high time to join the growing community and wealth of knowledge that you folks have on here. I'm a hobbyist with a primary interest in motorsports and have been (mig) welding for a few years now. ...
