Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?
According to what I read about them they shouldn't even start. But if they passed a bend test I'm fine. What's the member's name? I would like to read some of his posts. What you've read is incorrect. They will pass a bend test because although welds made with improperly stored 7018 rods can have d...

Re: Sandblasting at home
I've used similar units. They worked much better when I replaced the gun with an open 3/8" pipe nipple. I ran my 80 gallon upright and my engine drive air compressor together to put out enough air. (Sometimes I run 3 electric compressors instead) The gun and tips that come with it are way too s...

Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?
For non-critical work, my opinion is yes. I use plenty of those. I should get a rod oven though. The basic cheapies are $100-$200 at WeldingForLess That's a nice price for the 50lb thermostat one. :) I put a meter on my similar 50lb oven and it used $6 per month. My 20lb unit just runs all the time...

Re: Can a low 7018 exposure to moisture can problems?
The low-hy aspect is exactly what produces strong, ductile welds. So no, because in this case it is essentially the same thing, for the actual practical purpose. That's a blanket statement that I would not make Oscar. "Strong" is not a well defined term, but ductility is. And although hyd...

The first is clearly a spool gun, so mig weld it is.
The second has no slag developing right behind the weld. Mig weld.

On those machines (and ones with similar contacts like my Bobcat 225nt) it's a good practice to move through the contacts every time you use it.
It's even in my Bobcat manual to do that. Keeps them from getting corroded I suppose.

Re: Welding 1/2" to 1/16" Alum
For what you are doing, thick-to-thin won't really be that bad.
Once joined, just keep heat to the thick side and the puddle will stay with you.
Add rod to keep joint filled and weld happy.
First time I did something like that was with my old 1963 tig. No balance adjustments, just weld it

Re: the worst welds ever
Just remember that "drying" 7018 rods is 650 to 750°F. The chemical bond must be broken, it's not really drying in the standard sense. Longer periods at lower temperatures is not equivalent according to Lincoln. I always thought rod ovens are overpriced as well. Likely just the economy of...

Re: NEVERLAST lied again!
I mean, I feel for you, but at this point, all the positives and negatives of Everlast are well documented. Did you expect something to change this time around? Caveat emptor, as they say. Every once in a while I look at their machines, and the specs look great, super tempting. Some folks report go...

Re: Lift arc set up off generator
The simplest setup is just a torch and cable, clip your stick stinger on the cable end and scratch start.
That's what I do on my miller bobcat 225nt. It doesn't have tig setting.

No DC output, and a loud hum like the machine is working hard, are good indications of a bad rectifier.

Re: Is this start stop technique for thin sheet metal valid?
It's a valid method for thin stuff. I've done it on thin farm sheet metal with 3/32" 6011.
I just overlapping tack-tack it together, grind a little to make sure it's clean, then weld it better as needed.
I wouldn't do this on anything structural naturally, just for thin stuff where needed.

I think you'll really like the 17 size on steel.
I've melted a few 26 torches on AC for aluminum, but DC I've had better luck running too hot without melting down.
Then I made a water cooler system from a new-old-stock carbonator and now I love water cooled torches

Nothing good EVER comes out of political threads, EVER. Perplexed as to why some choose to participate in such non-sense. While politics may be important in real-life, on forums it's literally useless. IMO Completely agree, I advise people to stay out of there. There is a little rhyme that goes: &q...

I've had a long day so I' didn't quite study this whole arctical like I should've. But what jumped out at me was Table 4 . Am I misreading or misunderstanding, or is at least that artical and study suggesting that when a 7018 is moisture contaminated, be it left outside for long periods or even got...

If it has to be precise, I lay it on the table and get it where it needs to be.
If it doesn't, I just hold with one hand, tack with the other.

Also check that the post flow timer is sending power to it.
In my case, it was a bad timer, solenoid was good.
