Re: Tig gloves

I use a pair of carbonx gloves.. i really like 'em and they resist a lot more heat than those other types.

I think just about any Kevlar based glove will do the trick.

this is specifically what I use:

Re: Titanium

Looks a lot like stainless to me. Outside of the need for Ti to be super clean, it doesn't seem any harder to weld than stainless. I've been practicing on some 0.015 3"x5" plates - its only "hard" to dial in a range of settings that work with my travel speed. On the blocks of scr...

Re: Starter Consumables for a Noob?

Just get a range of cups and ply with 'em.

I tried a #4 for the hell of it.. but anyhow just get a few different cup sizes and go at it :-)

Re: Starter Consumables for a Noob?

I did some things similar.. I bought a pack of 1/16th & 3/32nd in both 2% thoriated and ceriated ..oh and lanthanated. Why all 3? ...well I wanted first hand experience at what a bad start looks like and wandering arc. I looked around on ebay and bought some shitty electrodes (got 6 packs for li...

Re: Tig torch

Well.. I've had it for a while now.. I gotta say, I thought the assload of attachments/heads was a bit useless.. until I had to weld a stud onto the end of an axle. The axle was "mushroomed" while removing a hub from the car during a wheel bearing swap. It was awesome going from a reg torc...

Re: 1st real attempt with aluminum (56k beware)

I do set the standards pretty high for myself, always have.
I've been able to pull off some really nice looking beads but still learning what the machine can do at different settings.

...I'd like to be able to at least hang with some of the Aerospace standards I've seen around on the internets.

1st real attempt with aluminum (56k beware)

Just wanted to stop by and show some monkey nuts that I've been able to lay down with some degree of success. It's been mostly thanks to this website/Jody for ensuring we have some down and dirty facts & tricks for welding Al. This was done on an Miller Aerowave (full feature model) at roughly 4...

Re: Tig torch

I went through something like this myself.

Personally, I wanted some flexibility and noticed the WP-225 torch.
I wont be able to give thoughts on it until the new welder gets here but that should be next week.

it's roughly the same size as a 20 series and weight... for me, the smaller the better.

Re: Beyond Basics Videos?

Thanks! I've ordered a variety of cups.

I'd like to post my progress in the weeks to come.

UPDATE:

#5 cups and some new gas lens arrived... but the damn welder is on the fritz!
Got a good deal on an Aerowave, should be freighted tomorrow(very excited about this one).

Beyond Basics Videos?

Jody, thank you very much for giving us a single place to source a ton of free information. I have personally learned a good deal and whats more is I've learned how to spot `less than ideal` weld beads, etc. Currently I'm interested in seeing some videos from you geared beyond the basics. What I'm s...

Re: How is this weld done?

This weld was performed before i got my welder and i saw a tig weave done on steel and it looks like the same technique was used here, but how do you go about it? One more thing is there any benifit to this type of weld? Thanks Please correct me if I'm wrong but I honestly think that weave is done b...
