first Tig project - 2x72 grinder and stand ...
Started thinking/planning about it when my crappy 2x72 cobbled up grinder motor died in early Jan 2021, and I started actual welding in March 2021. I still have to weld the work surface to the work arm this coming weekend, and re-do the belt covers (I burned through the thin metal!), but it is actua...

Re: New to me older HTP Tig welding equipment ...
welcome to the house. As cj stated, you are using too high of gas flow ... 2x the size of the cup will work for what you are doing. Steel is more forgiving should you error in torch angle, distance from work piece and adding filler. You want the torch almost straight up to the work piece and about ...

Re: New to me older HTP Tig welding equipment ...
Thank you. I suspected as much. Based on Jody's 3x tips for Tig (one being not enough Argon) I went "high" to get started. That is a #8 cup, so probably around 16-20 CFH would be more appropriate then?cj737 wrote:Your gas flow needs only to be 2x cup size. 30 CFH is way too high for what you need.

New to me older HTP Tig welding equipment ...
My friend and mentor only uses HTP welding machines, and after he convinced me to get a local welding class, he also encouraged me to save my money and buy an HTP welder. I did, of course, and back in 2013 I bought a new HTP Mig 200 welder, which has been 100% flawless so far. So when I told him I w...

Re: 4x6 metal bandsaw stand/base and mods ...
So much work... watch out for the gear box. They like to strip the teeth wich makes the whole thing worthless. As well as the bearings on the main wheels. My personal experience... Excellent point, as those are two known weak points. One of the first things I did when I got the saw was to re...

Very nice cuts with your base mod. How much different is the precision of a cut made like you have now vs stock cutting angles on the machine? Better than I expected. While testing, I cut this piece, which game a nice, small, right triangle: http://m3coupe.com/Welding/Bandsaw_Stand/20131215_133319....

Re: help me out.
Practice, practice, practice, take a look at Jody's video on running beads on a flat stock just like you are. Rod angle and speed and watch the puddle forming behind the arc and try to keep it as constant in size, width and height. Also keep an eye on the length of your arc, looks a bit like your l...

Now that the electrical wiring is protected from coolant, I can assemble and wire the new VFD and 3-phase motor. I started by installing a grommet to protect the single phase power coming into the VFD: http://m3coupe.com/Welding/Bandsaw_Stand/20140125_160551.jpg http://m3coupe.com/Welding/Bandsaw_St...

For the VFD, following my mentor's advice, I put it away from swarf, but I also wanted an external enclosure to protect the unit and wiring. I found a scrap metal box in my "shop", which was almost the right size: http://m3coupe.com/Welding/Bandsaw_Stand/DSCF1583.JPG http://m3coupe.com/Wel...

WOW! I have one of these HF band saws in the garage and will never look at it the same again. I never even thought of upgrading it the way you did. Looks great. I do wonder what TPI blade you use. I think I have 10ish TPI on mine but it has been a long time since I bought blades. I had been getting...

Re: 4x6 metal bandsaw stand/base and mods ...
For the new base and clamping "system", I wanted to be able to hold stock at 45 deg on both sides of the blade. The stock system/clamp of course can't do this, so I gave up on it, and went to a simple model where (similar to welding) I just clamp the piece to the base. It is more work, and...

Re: 4x6 metal bandsaw stand/base and mods ...
A little bit more background on the "why" I upgraded the bandsaw with a hydraulic piston, since this is a popular mod for 4x6 bandsaws ..... The stock bandsaw comes with this stupid spring, which is meant to "try" to counterbalance the weight of the horizontal mass, in order to &...

Nice! How's your present investment (not figuring labor and/or enjoyment) compare to, say, a used TennSmith saw of similar size? Steve S Steve, That is a tough question, since I almost always will fix/repair rather than replace. It has been so long since I got the original 4x6, that I have no idea ...

Here is my second welding project (first one was my welding table http://forum.weldingtipsandtricks.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3816 ). I have had this HF 4x6 probably since 2007 or so. Right when I got it, I discarded the flimsy folding "legs", and made a wood base for it. I later added a...

Probably around $100 for the steel pieces for the table itself, and the premium/lockable caster wheels another $80 or so.ironmanjay wrote:What did it cost to build that table?
