Re: Holy $€#* my arc welding is rough

Well, I'm no pro weldor...just a farm "boy" (at 70 years old) that sticks back broken equipment. But I always had trouble with 6011 (6010) coming out smoothly and looking like 7018 appears...smooth with consistent ripples. I'd hide the ugly 6011 base layer with a layer of 7018. Then I stud...

Re: how do you guys feel about tattoos?

As an old timer, I haven't seen the logic in tattoos. Is it because it makes one feel unique in this crowded world? Why go through the expense of disfiguring your body unless you think your body is unacceptable as it is? Piercing seems to follow the same thought process. Of course, it is your body a...

Re: No arc, very frustrating.

Here is some info on your welder that may help. Be sure to check the wiring as in one of the posts: http://community.ebay.com/t5/Business-Industrial/ARKSEN-AC-welder-BX1-250c1/td-p/22297530 Of course, the other possibility is that you have a bum welder. But if the wiring is not right then breakers w...

Re: No arc, very frustrating.

Why 6013? Its burning characteristics are very iffy. Of course, there are some pros that have no problem with it, especially in Europe. Personally, I hate the stuff...but I'm no pro. Try 3/32" 6011. Easy to establish an arc, easy restart, needs low amps, burns even on poorly prepared metal. 701...

Re: Welding video Clips from 2015

Thanks for the effort!!! Hope it works out. I'll be the first in line for purchase. And...including the videos that have a combo of processes (like a recent TIG/stick) would be fine on both DVDs. It might even help some of us to expand our skills after seeing a demo of the other process and how each...

Re: Welding video Clips from 2015

As always, I'd buy a DVD if they were method specific. That is, a DVD about stick, a different one about MIG, another about TIG...especially if they were over a string of years. I.E. "Stick welding 2010 - 2015". It would take some editing, of course, but increased sales may justify ...

I always have my fingers and toes to rely on. Nothing over 20, of course.

Seriously, do you mean metric or English (fractional) measurement?

Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus?

What is a specific application?

I'd hire you in a heartbeat.

A couple of hiccups in the first weld photo but it looks like the selection (crop) in the second photo was the best example of what you can do.

I'd be tempted to run it just a bit hotter to reduce crowning but that's just me.

Re: Decent plasma cutter for garage fab stuff?

If you absolutely must have 120/240 then Everlast may be an inexpensive "entry level" MOSFET choice. Not the best, but good enough for occasional garage / farm use.

Re: Tomato cages

I tried the same thing as the OP. In my case the welding was to close the circle of wire to make the cage rather than extend the height. The 1/16 6013 didn't want to light up very well on the rusty wire. When it did it burned the wire off. Can't remember the setting but it was around 40A. Nothing se...

RE: the point above. Now that WTT / Jody has an extensive library of welding videos, has a consideration been made for producing a process-specific series of videos? For example, >a stick welding video disk >a MIG video disk >a TIG video disk >an O/A disk I don't buy the videos by date (year) becaus...

Re: 3g 7018 plate test and other vertical stuff

Thanks for a few stick videos. Most of us farm-type weldors don't do much else and the out of position stuff is a killer when welding infrequently and mainly for repairs. TIG and MIG are left for the real pros IMO. Not really suited for outdoors in the wind while climbing under a tractor or implemen...

Re: Rod sticks, won't start bead..

Sanding usually isn't enough. Use a grinder on both the work and the stinger contact points.

Turn up the amps until the rod starts. Usually, 6011 starts extremely easy compared to other rods.

Re: Padding Beads with 7018

Thanks for occasionally showing a basic welding video.

For us non-technical and farm guys it is a pleasure to watch a master at work. And there is no attempt to cover up an occasional miscue. It lets us know that our efforts are not so out-of-whack as we sometimes think they are.

Very impressive.

Re: new stinger and ground clamp

The Harbor Freight ground clamps work very well. I used three of them to replace the three on my "go to" machines. http://www.harborfreight.com/400-amp-welding-ground-clamp-66708.html The HF stingers are also just fine. The 400 amp one is a bit bulky. The 200 amp one can get a bit hot. In ...

Re: Harbor Freight Welding Table

I purchased 2 of them at $44.00 each(with 25% off coupon). They are a light duty table, but are well worth the price I paid. Assembly instructions are a little screwy and some extra parts - bolts and washers. Some of the weld nuts need to be chased(mainly for the locking handles). The table coating...

Welcome.

First "help out" is to watch all of Jody's videos on this site for whatever process you are using or plan to use. Sounds like stick it the current choice.

The videos are the eyes for you to look through when you practice. If it looks like Jody's then you have it!

Re: Chipping a hot weld?????

After all your experience you likely know that the slag produced by different rods behave differently. 6011 seems particularly offensive in this area. 7018 has the slag come off quite nicely if the welder's setting is right. You might as well wait for the weld to cool a bit before chipping it. Other...
