I have welded on some bearings (for various toys) up to about 1 1/4" without preheating, but I believe that preheating would help. Just be careful...they retain heat for a long time.

Could you post a picture of one of your welds? Also, where are you located? Maybe someone on the forum is close by and could take a look.

What are you cleaning it with? I have had it happen with some sanding disk that I had used. Changed to a dedicated stainless brush and it stopped.

I just found Jody's web site and started checking it out and found this forum. I've known Jody for a few years and he actually taught me to tig and mig weld. Looks like the forums are loaded with good info and I look forward to researching them.
