Re: Cast alloy timing cover
Heres the before of a casting I did today. This is a Harley "shovelhead" I was able to disassenble the head and properly clean it. I glass bead blasted it. I then took all the rough casting off with a cardide burr. This head is a least 30 yrs. old. HD seems to use a good alloy, because the...

Re: Cast alloy timing cover
Preheat shouldn't be an issue, just make sure the piece is not ice cold. Expansion should not be an issus because you are welding on an outside end. Try to use some helium in your gas. Helium makes this go much easier. Hit the whole area with a carbide bur and get all that oxide off of there. I don'...

I've seen these marketed by a couple different companies. They were aimed at engine rebuilders & cyl head rebuilders for the repair of cast iron parts. I know of 1 company that sells the powder.

Re: cutting material
I found this small version of the dual saw. This is really a "savage" tool. It cuts ok but is really hard to control to get accurate, straight cut.

Re: Duty cycle...
I've smoked a couple wp 20's myself. I think duty cycle is 240 amps @ 100%. I never weld at more than 210 amps hfac. I think the 1st melt down was due to solinoid failure in the weldor. After that I hooked directly to the cooler and took the solinoid out of the loop. Not sure what caused the 2nd fai...

Re: Filler and precedure for welding a 4140 forging
Crankshafts are usually welded by submreged arc process. Set up in a special "lathe". Either the chucks can be offset to rod journal stroke or the welding gun follows the journal. Filler material and flux are the manufacturer's secret.

Mixing gases
I would like to try mixing my own gases. I use 75 argon/25 helium to weld castings. The pre mixes are getting pricey. I seem to remember a vid that Jody did where he made a mixer, but can't find it. I remember 2 bottles, 2 regulators, and a Y valve. How would I get the ratio I'm looking for. Also, i...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
All the welding that I normally do is "saving the day" for someone. I don't build or make anything. I just repair cracked and broken stuff. Here is a high dollar intake manifold. It's for an Olds, so it's already a pricey item and its's been ported.

Re: Help chosing an inverter machine
The HTP 221 is going to be my next machine. Last year they did a 10% off Black Friday sale. I'm hoping they do the same this year. Regardless, that is what I'm saving towards. I really like that it comes with an SSC pedal and a CK torch. At $2500, it has a lot of capability and range of adjustments...

I would give a call to Lincoln. Most manufacturers are able & happy to help. And they usually know their equipment very well. Tell them what you are doing and hope to acomplish, and I'm sure they can help.

Re: Bench grinder find needs a stand
I bought a Skill drill & flashlite combo. SKILL, the great AMERICAN name. It's now made in China. Seemed like a quality product. Nice heft to the drill & the flashlite was really bright. The switch on the flashlite was broken in a couple of months. I'm the only one to use my tools and since ...

Hi all. Been hanging around WTT for a while and decided to join in. I'm not a welder by trade, but weld as part of my job. I'm an engine builder/engine machinist and almost all of my welding is tigging of aluminum castings. I've been tigging for about 20-25 years or so. There was a time when there w...
