Re: Welding Turn Table
Welding positioners are a great tool but at work I find myself putting my Health Miles pedometer on it all night long to get some extra steps in while I sit at my welding table.

Re: Rockers
Rockers are usually 18 ga. and a main structural component on a cab. 24 ga. is what they use for heat ducts.
You really need to match the original metal thickness so you can get good penetration. Right now you are burning through the 24 and not getting any penetration on the original 18 ga rockers.

Re: Robot welding, who else plays with them?
Might be for the best. I've been listening to the sound of gouging rods and grinders for the last couple days.
Robot F'd up a BUNCH of parts before a human caught the mistake. At least when I screw up my supervisor can kick me in the ass. It hurts to kick a ton of metal.

Re: Robot welding, who else plays with them?
I will tell you, robots are not going to put us out of work. They can (when running) make production increase.
When they are down, which happens, they are no better than the guy that called in sick.

So has no one sneaked in to see whats behind that curtain - you sure there is actually a robot in there ? maybe they got some Mexicans living / welding in there - that's why Mick has to keep re welding their fook ups ! Jose and Hose B aside, the robots do screw it up once in a while. Even more frus...

Re: Robot welding, who else plays with them?
Well, I tack up the parts, place the parts on a cart and set it on it's "dock", and press a couple buttons on a touch screen. The robot then drops the curtain, grabs the part, places it inside, raises the curtain, and the magic happens. The robot then lowers the curtain and places the part...

Re: Good Shop Tips
I see this all the time at work. A few air tools laying on a bench, nipple facing them, grab a grinder and start grinding all that dust right into the nipples. Pretty fast way to kill an air tool. Same could be said for the air tool holders that hold the tools by the nipple. Put a cap of some sort o...

Re: Money in welding ?
I can't speak for a properly trained/schooled certified welder, but I left the auto body field for a MIG welding job. Started at $18.60 an hour with great benefits after 30 days. Almost 90 days in to it now and I am up to $22.75 hr. Not too exciting, but I think it is great pay for what I am doing. ...

Re: An idea for a welding table
I looked at the link you posted. That table top grid seems very thin, and my guess is that it would be limited for setting up jigs for very lightweight assemblies and weld outs. I agree that the above link is too light for anything heavier than bike frames, small assemblies, or just tacking it up u...

An idea for a welding table
Like most people, space is a premium in my personal shop and I don't like the idea of a dedicated welding table when I don't weld every week in my shop. Yet there are times when I need a solid, flat surface to weld on. I have this in my shop: http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o277/crathman/snaponmi...

Re: Seeing what you're doing [mig]
I have an old Snap-On auto dimming helmet (about 10-12 yrs old) and one of those flamed, cheap helmets at my shop. I have always struggled to see. Tried the cheater lenses (which don't fit the cheap helmet btw), didn't help. A few weeks ago I started a new job as a welder. They issued out a new Spee...

Didn't have much supervision last night so I tinkered around a bit last night. Still haven't found the magic formula of Wire Speed v/s Voltage but I did see something that I didn't know last night. I was pulling the trigger on some scrap I found (not easy to find at this job) and kept an eye on the ...

Re: Weld Spatter
I spent 9 hours welding the same part last night... so I took over for the day shift guy. I wiggled the voltage around a bit to see what would happen on a few of the parts, but for the most part I didn't do anything to make a huge difference. I am still just trying to understand settings. I was weld...

Re: Weld Spatter
Cars. 'Globular' transfer mode does leave some spatter. After you kick into 'spray' transfer, the spatter should stop. It has to be in spray mode. It welds fine at other wire speeds. Just have an issue with it in the upper 200's. Are you running .035" or .045"? Are you using 90/10 or 75/2...

Weld Spatter
I am hoping this is a simple question to answer, but I haven't found out how to correct it on my own. At work, on certain settings. Usually around 250-300 amps I get alot of weld spatter. It's a Lincoln Power Wave 455 with the remote gun (whatever they call it). I am usually welding 1/4" to 3/8...

Re: mig setting for auto body repair
This will be my first reply on the forum. I've been doing bodywork for decades. So here are a few thoughts. Use wire that is similar to the thickness of the material. On sheet metal, which is usually 19-20 gauge, I use .024 wire with CO2/Argon mix. Take your time and fit the patch. Gaps are a proble...

Newbie from Minnesota
Hello! My name is Chris. I grew up on a farm fixing broken equipment with a stick welder, later in high school I learned to braze with a torch. It wasn't until I went to autobody school in the early 90's that I learned to use a MIG. Years later, around 2000, I learned to use a TIG manly because of T...
