Re: Cast Iron Vice Repair.
Hey John,
Not trying to be stupid or anything, and I didn't read all of the posts, but are you sure that it is cast iron? I have run across a lot of vises that were cast steel not cast iron. Just a thought.

Re: Elongation ???
Sorry for not replying sooner. It primarily depends on application and to which of the characteristics or all is of primary importance. Tensile strength, yield strenght, elongation, and charpy v-notch. If you have a weldment that is primarily loaded with tensile stresses, then tensile strength is of...

Re: Elongation ???
A mechanical property of metal ( Ductility )that is the degree to which a material may be bent, stretched, or compressed before it ruptures. It is a point between tensile strength and yield strength and is expressed as a percentage of the original length.

I will definitely have to agree with ya on the post title.
Is this for the handrail job you were talking about? If not, what type of metal and thickness will you be welding on??

Re: Dual-Shield outdoors?
Glad everthing is working out. Just curious though, what wire were you using before?? In all the plate fab shops I have worked in around here, we always used an outershield wire. One thing about the NR-233 that you need to pay attention to is the stick-out. Try as much as possible to maintain the pr...

Re: Dual-Shield outdoors?
Let me know if this all sounds okay, I may just be off my rocker a bit. I pride myself on knowing enough to be dangerous, but stopping and asking when I'm not 100% sure so if it turns out I'm an idiot here, I won't take it personally. I can definitely relate to that. Actually you are right on point...

Re: Dual-Shield outdoors?
What exactly are you going to be doing the welding on? I have used a "dualshield" wire for years to make repairs on a lot of different things, mainly heavy equipment and have only had a problem with the shielding gas less than a handful of times. Has the contractor provided you with a weld...

Use Grade 430, 308L, 309 or 310 filler rod, depending upon application. AS 1554.6 pre-qualifies welding of Grade 430 with Grade 309 f...

Re: Stainless to carbon steel
You should use a 309 stainless filler. That is designed for joining carbon steel to stainless. As far as welding, it will weld just like carbon steel.

Re: Can lighting be used to reduce arc flash intensity
The surrounding ambient lighting has nothing to do with the ultraviolet A and B rays emitted by a welding arc. Plain and simple, if you are in the area of a welding arc without eye protection you are asking for trouble. UV rays travel in straight lines and cannot go up and over welding curtains (the...

Well, it definitely sounds like you have the potential for a lot of work. If you can, visit these potential customers and see if they will have the need for a mobile weldor. If so, learn as much as you can about that particular field and the types of welding and repairs you will be making. That was ...

Re: Aluminum Oil Pans
When you have an oil-soaked or carbon permeated part, you can try to heat with a torch to burn most of it out, but you are probably stuck with having to weld, grind, weld, grind, and weld some more till you get good metal in there that will not crap up on ya. That kind of work is a pain in the @*!

Re: Wanting to start a welding biz
Nick, Delraydella hit it right on the nose. The first thing you have to do is determine if there is enough need in your area for your type of service. The second is to see how many are out there providing the same service you will be providing. Unless there is alot of work to go around for everyone,...

Re: no helium available in my area!
Yeah, try to keep it around 200 deg. F.
You don't want to get too high on the temp or you will start to run into microstructure changes in the aluminum.

What is the pupose for the argon/helium mix. Machine limitations and material thickness?? If so, try using a preheat.

Re: Plasma cutting
This is one of the better explanations of Plasma gas selections. As for the question of how long a bottle will last, that will depend on the material being cut. You could range from 40 psi to 90 psi depending on the material and thickness. Hope this helps http://www.centricut.com/New_Lessons/lessons...

Re: Plasma cutting
Plasma Cutting - Recommended Gases Compressed Air is the most commonly used gas for lower current plasma cutting and works well for most metals from gauge thickness to 1 inch. It leaves an oxidized cut surface. Compressed air can also be used for plasma gouging on carbon steel. Nitrogen is often us...

Re: no helium available in my area!
Sorry, but argon-hydrogen blends are primarily used on austenitic stainless steel (300 series), nickel, and nickel alloys. Hydrogen enhanced mixtures are not recommended to weld carbon or low-alloy steel, or any of the copper, aluminum, or titanium alloys since cracking or porosity will occur due to...

I have never had an issue with the oxidation. Just knock off the cut edge with a grinder and your good to go. Besides, if oxidation is an issue, then nitrogen would do the trick. No sense in wasting money for the argon/helium.

and i was told argon argon/heli was the best from stainless, but is it possible to get the 70-90 psi the machine needs to be effective? All you need is compressed air for the plasma cutter.
