Re: Cast iron repair... Help Please?

Thank you all for the excellent replies. I knew that repairing cast iron can be a tough job, but wow, now I really know how much care you have to take. Being that I have NEVER stick welded before, I'm not sure about going that route. I can TIG weld at an above average level, but I'm not sure if TIG ...

Cast iron repair... Help Please?

Hi guys, I recently bought a great vise- Reed 4C. However, the base is missing an ear. I don't have the ear to weld back on, so I will have to make one and weld it on. Questions: What kind of steel can I make the ear out of? What welds well to cast iron? What practices must I use to achieve good res...

Re: Welding Table project

Nice table,

I like leaving my vise free on the table and not bolted down. If something is heavy enough that it needs to be bolted down I just clamp the vise to the table.

Yeah man this one wasn't too fun because the crack went into a merge between primaries so access was terribly difficult. But I learned from the experience!

Re: Bought a new machine!

Glad you like it! I really like the PowerPro 256S that I just got too!

The torch is definitely bulky. But the new style torch with the removable torch switch is pretty nice compared to the old blue handled one.

Re: Major AC TIG problems? SOLVED

Hola, To be honest I don't remember the balance setting anymore. But I believe that with little to no gas coverage, the tungsten has a greater propensity to ball, regardless of the AC balance. edit- I re read my post, and I guess I tried it with balance 30% and with balance 70%. The 70% probably did...

Re: Flattening down aluminum weld beads?

Grinding it will definitely remove some strength, so you have to make a judgement call based on the application. Make sure you have good penetration to start with.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Cool thread. I don't have any pictures of the finished product, but here's one my friend secretly took when I was fixing an exhaust manifold for him. The previous owner ran it with a busted engine mount. It had an annular crack which I tried fixing up. It was tough access but it will do... I can edi...

Re: Anything wrong with spreading the dimes out more?

I agree with the above- Add more filler wire and you'd probably be ok spacing them out that much. But that doesn't look like a very strong weld as of now. But it looks good.

Re: Help on my 304 SS welding, looks awful

I think I'd set my machine to 25, and not be much over half-pedal after the start. Sorry if this is side tracking a little... Having not used a foot pedal in the past (just got myself one a week recently) I was under the impression once the foot pedal is plunged in the machine. The machines Amp sett...

Re: Major AC TIG problems? SOLVED

Well, I figured out the problem. It was a lack of gas coverage due to the collet. The torch supplied with the machine only came with 3/32 collets and collet body. I only had 1/16 and 1/8 electrodes. So I modified the collet body and collet to accept my 1/8 tungsten. Drilling out the collet was not t...

Re: Major AC TIG problems?

Hey guys, I am limited to that torch setup until I get the dinse connector for my other torch on thursday. I am hoping the other torch solves my problems. The weld with the gas lens was done in one run, and yes the shielding doesn't look great. But that is an older piece of steel so the colors get d...

Re: Major AC TIG problems?

Yes I am really hoping the air cooled torch makes a world of a difference, but I have my doubts. I should get the dinse connector on Thursday. Hopefully it is the correct on and it hooks up perfectly. The machine on AC just seems super weird. Regarding the water, Ray from Everlast also said that min...

Re: Major AC TIG problems?

Hey Steve,

The CK130 is air cooled. No water cooling variable there :)

I am really hoping it is a problem with the torch or the water or something.

I do not want to have to send this machine back.

I also tried the torch switch. No dice, same issue. Plus, the foot pedal works great on DC. It really seems like something inside the machine changed sin...

Re: Major AC TIG problems?

Once the dinse connector comes, I'll be able to try my ck130. I have a gas lens for that.

But I still have to solve my AC problem. I am going to call Everlast and see if they can assist me..
