Re: Got a new helmet....

Remember to check out the shifting speed of your helmet choices when buying a new one, as well. The flash might not be fast enough for your brain to actually register but you are still getting a short flash every time. And that can add up. The $300 Miller Elite shifts at 0.020 second. Cheap Hobo Fre...

Re: Welding Safety

We might add: Purging a flammable container or tank with vehicle exhaust (gasoline or diesel) can be dangerous because you are assuming that all the fuel in the exhaust is already burnt. Some vehicles may run a rich fuel/air mixture which may mean you are putting more fuel into an already volatile s...

Re: Looking for a new helmet

When I compared auto-darkening helmets, I found that the really cheap ones shifted at the same rate as the expensive ones: 25 thousandths of a second. Sellstrom has a new one out that shifts at 3 ten thousandths of a second, almost 100 times faster; but I have never seen a price for it. Knowing that...

Failing that, many of the industrial equpment companies offer free and very inexpensive safety videos for their products, inclu...

Welding Safety

I have recommended and borrowed from Jody's website for many years now. I teach a lot of newbies and borrowed the Top 10 Ways for my class's safety lectures. As they needed more than just the Top Ones, I kept adding to the list. It is now up to 28 and still rising. I am no PHD either, nor a metallur...

Re: Welding and Cameras

Thanks guys. Yes, I had planned on using an auto-darkening filter in front, probably on 12 or 13 for maximum detail in the puddle area, then lightening as necessary. We all know that despite that brilliant light at the end of the torch/stinger/gun, once filtered, it doesn't always light up much of t...

Welding and Cameras

Howdy, I am a Junior College welding instructor and I am wanting to video my and my students' welds. I was a photographer in a previous life, so I have lots of experience behind the lens, but it was all film and still photography. Video is an entirely different animal. Does anyone have any experienc...
